I recently purchased four lionel engine shells. two 1656, one 2055 and a 682 turbine .

When I received the shells I looked over the 682 shell, noticed it is an original 682, as I looked closer I noticed the holes that the boiler front, railing,  and oiler linkage didn't have any marks showing it had any parts put on it. Also there is no 682 numbers on the cab, close look it appears that it never had any numbers stamped on it.

I would like to hear from the experts if this could be a NOS shell.

It's not NOS. The oiler pin holes shows paint wear and looks like the pins have been broken off.  Look closely at the 4th pic, you can see the wear from the oiler linkage. And way too banged up. Looks like something Madison Hardware parted out..

There isn't any broken pins in the holes, it only has paint in them, no indication there was any studs put in the holes. Where it looks like the oiler linkage was used, it has no wear, just a chip in the paint. Also all other holes just have paint in them, shows not indication anything was in them.

This shell isn't banged up, what you see is chipped paint, the over all shell in straight, no bent or gouged  parts.

NOS is an item that appears to be new and was never in use.

I’d have to agree with Bill on this one, ….NOS= New, old stock. …..so first thing wrong, it surely doesn’t look new. So that takes it out of that category. As far as it being original paint, that’ll be nearly impossible to tell from pictures. What you have there is a nice foundation to build yourself a 682……😉

I'm debating whether to build it, I already have three 682's, one I had to replace the oiler linkage studs, and two of which I completely rebuilt.

I don’t see an “A” in NOS, ……NEW OLD STOCK….not APPEARS TO BE NEW OLD STOCK  ……this means the item is new,…new being unblemished …..your shell is the definition of blemished……sorry to bust your bubble, …it’s a cool piece, …but NOS it is not ……
