I have an old version 3.1 PS2 system running my O gauge engines on a Christmas layout. My son bought an HO starter set with PS3. Can my current unit be used with his PS3 engine. If it can, can it simultaneously be used to power the HO engines. One TIU,1 controller, driving both.

I think it is best if you upgrade to 4.20 version to work with the PS-3s. At that point you can use one TIU to run both. Use Fixed 1 to run the O and then use a DC power Supply through Fixed 2 to run HO. There have been some recent post about mixing an matching AC and DC. For this layout I would not power the TIU via the Aux port. Just let it be powered via Fixed 1.

I agree with your thoughts. However, while haven't experimented much with using DC voltage, I know that the following will work.
Use AC for O gauge on Fixed #2 and DC for HO on Fixed #1. That way, Ed can use DC for the Aux. Power port, if he so chooses. The only no-no of which I have personal experience is using DC on Fixed #1 with AC on the Aux. Power port.
