A family member just got an Athearn train set but it has no power pack. I have O gauge and know nothing about HO. Does he need an Athearn power pack to power the train?

He needs a dc power supply, something with a low power output for the ho trains.

Any HO power pack will do, it doesn't have to be Athearn branded. MRC has been pretty much the standard for HO packs for decades.

Thanks Rusty I was able to get one. Now what is a decent track system to use? I just found out that he has none.
Atlas, Bachmann and Kato all have track systems with molded ballast similar to FasTrack. Lionel has a new magnetic track system, but I'm not sure about its general availability yet.
Bachmann would probably be the mostly budget-conscious for someone starting out. Bachmann's track is also what's included in Athearn train sets.
