Railsounds 4.0 Problem

You could pull and reseat the RS power supply and RS board incase they have some contact corrosion.  Also inspect/test the speaker. G

The speaker may just need some exercise. Run it some more to see if it clears up.

If that doesn't do any good, get a chip puller and remove/reseat the big chips on the board.  From your description, you could be losing one or two bits due to corrosion/dirt on one or two pins.

I've had a total of four devices with RailSounds that required reseating of the PLCC chips and all was well.  Those sockets seem prone to developing some oxidation over time and causing all sorts of odd issues.

I did a TMCC + railsounds conversion on one of my diesels using a variety of old spare parts. At first it sounded like do do but after running for awhile everything cleared up and sounded awesome.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I have reseated the boards and run it for awhile without resolving the issue.

 

I'll investigate a chip puller next.

I got the chip-puller at Radio Shack some years back, here it is: PLCC Extractor  The only "mod" I made to mine was to slightly file down the extraction jaws, they were a bit wide for some PLCC sockets.  Since that fix, I've used it for years and hundreds of extractions.
