Does anyone have an idea as to what I could use to replace a Lionel 022 switch controller?  I'm looking for something that I can surface mount (not panel mount) on the outside edge of my layout.  I currrently have the 022 controllers out there and I'm really tired of banging in to them and bleeding all over the place!  I know it has to have some sort of momentary contact like the 022 controller but I haven't been able to find anything I think would work and be surface mounted.

Thanks for any help.

As seen on my website page, Conventional or Remote Control - Page 2 of 2
The Trackside Industries control panel structure started out as a mountain and evolved into a 3 Track Engine House (to be completed "someday").  The turnouts are controlled with mom spdt center off toggle switches.  Tracks are controlled with sp toggle switches.
The TRACKSIDE INDUSTRIES control panel back shows under side of panel and the five 3/4" conduits for wire.

For surface mounting, the toggle switches are mounted on painted acrylic plates 1/8" x 2 1/4" x 3 1/2".  The plates are attached to the surface with #4 wood screws.  The large holes for switch bodies are drilled with spade bits.  Switches can also be mounted in plastic project boxes attached to the fascia.

The 022 control is nothing more than a SPDT lever switch with the lamps wired one side of each lamp to the switched contact, then the other side of each bulb wired to the common contact.  If you want to stay with spring loaded styles, here is a version: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07VHCB1Q4

There are also full size SPDT spring loaded toggle switches with both screw and solder terminals.

There is another style that is more expensive and harder to get that was used in telephone systems.  These had a large bat handle to manipulate, but would extend further into a panel such as this on on ebay:  (link removed per TOS)

And as others have said, a pair of push buttons would do the same thing.

How about staying with your existing controllers, but using an L-bracket to turn the handles vertical? Something like these.

Mount the L-bracket to the layout with the horizontal piece to the top, then mount the controllers to the top of the brackets.

No re-wiring and you keep the “old school” look of the Lionel controllers.

Thanks all,

I borrowed a DZ-1002 and tried it and it works well.  I was concerned about running the draw for the 022 switch through it but I guess is doesn't draw that much power and only for a split second.  It also stays lit and shows the position with the on-board LED.

Now all I have to do is find them.  I've looked at a couple of websites and different stores only seem to have a couple in stock at best or no stock at all.

I appreciate all the help and advice.
