I own a K-Line Prewar K-4 with TMCC/Cruise. My engine is currently using the original K-Line motor driver PCB, which Ive had to replace several times due to overheating. Does ERR make a board that I can replace the K-line PCB with, I would like to get rid of the original motor driver board.
If so, is the board an easy swap, or will I need to change some of the wiring?

I replaced the board in my B&A Berkshire with a Cruise M. Don't remember all the details of the install. If I can do it. I would say it was fairly straight forward. I also added GRJ's Chuff Generator to get 4 chuffs.
Nick, I have the St Fe Berk and the same board went out on mine. As with what Dave stated, the ERR Cruise M is a great replacement. One big benefit is the ERR Cruise M does not require the strobe tape on the flywheel. Rather, it reads the feedback from the can motor and using this to regulate speed. This is much smoother and accurate, works great. I had no difficulty with the change out of the two boards, the ERR manual is very concise and straight forward. I now run the St Fe Berk a lot and it is a good running, nice detailed engine, one I really enjoy pulling consists around the layout. I am very glad ERR has a quality product to make this possible, and can be performed by myself with ease.

Ok, looking at ERR's website, they sell aCruise M kit for TMCC modular locomotives, and a steamer kit. Not sure what the difference is?

Nick you can use either one. Not sure they even make the generic one anymore. The steamer kit will work with wired or wireless tethers. The generic one may not work with wireless tethers. Because you still have a wired tether either will work.

Buy the one for steamers, it'll work in any application. My understanding is they're phasing the other version out that didn't work with the wireless tether.
I've gotten several K-Line engines where the cruise board just smoked for no reason, clearly there was some design issue that was not addressed in those. I think the Version 4 boards were pretty decent.
Does the Cruise Commander M work with the original sound board? I assume yes, if the original electronics are modular. When did Lionel and other manufacturers switch to TMCC modular electronics?

The switch was around 2000, and yes the CC-M is intended to replace the DCDR (non-cruise) or the DCDS (cruise) boards as well as the K-Line cruise module.
The CC-M is NOT suitable for replacing the LCRU or LCRU2, that requires the standard Cruise Commander.
