Some might be interested in S trains made in Europe like the Bub train shown here; I wrote an article with pictures about this, which is attached here as .pdf.
JEP (who made this blue sleeping car) used the same coupler type from 1933-1948 on their 0 gauge trains, one side of the car had the hook and the other side a loop:
I did not recognise the similarity between the AF link coupler and the JEP coupler . I now see there is some similarity, but he AF coupler is symmetrical and the JEP coupler is asymmetrical. I think they are quite different.
That Bub set is a beauty. I recall some old British scratchbuilding books that showed the hook and loop, so I think it's been around almost as long as toy trains in different variations. S scale is mostly a builder's scale in Britain, with some memorable layouts over the years. The photo is the S scale Palitoy Prairie tank engine from the early 1950s. The coupler looks like some type of hook-and-bar.
