It just goes to show you that no matter how much we love steam engines that when it gets to the bottom line the money has to come from somewhere . After watching that show it's a shame to think that the 614 is sitting on a siding out in the weather and it'll take years to get the funding to do anything with it if it gets done at all.
The 1980's must have been viewed as steam nirvana .Then came all the new rules and regulations and insurance requirements .
I remember in a post a while back Rich said it takes about a million dollars these days to get a steam engine up and running.
And even then your at the mercy of the big boys to have a place to run it.
Dirty shame.

I agree with you as far as big mainline steam is concerned. Even big steam restorations took place when no relationship with a railroad existed.
It seems to me that the piper came calling with the insurance crisis of the mid80s. It affected everything. For a while, I could not get decent car insurance. Amusement parks closed. And of course premiums just go up. Regulations to guarantee safety came later.
