Well I am always up for a challenge and if I can do it with stuff I have or in-expensively, then I will try it. I had a bag of 20 min mud so I grabbed some shop towels form Home Depot and made my shells tonight. I am pretty pleased with the results. It's pretty cold in the garage so I am looking forward to the morning when it should be pretty much dried out. The trick was mixing the mud soupy enough so the towels could be coated but not too runny.

Steve,

Smile Great Idea, I might have to come back and revisit that. Yeah I have two Woodland Scenics rock molds. A really big one and a medium mold.

D&D, Yes that is regular old mud. I use the fast setting. I've never tried the 5 min. I use the 20 minute all the time and I am very comfortable with it. I'm just finishing up a remodel on my house and did much of the drywall and plaster myself. I used the 20 min mud in my rock molds last year and it worked just fine.

Groundhogslayer, My only complaint is the shop towels - retain moisture for a long time. It is much colder now and I am in the garage, so that is probably part of the issue.

Nancy, Thank you, my 8 year old son had fun slathering a top coat on and it probably is not exactly how I would have done it, but we had a great time. My 11 year old daughter really helped me last night get ready for round two. We knocked off a big chunk of frame work, but this time I might use plaster of Paris with the towels. I can work really fast and am not worried about the set time with the Plaster of Paris. I used plaster of Paris in the molds and they came out great.

I used plaster of paris with my shop towels. You have to mix ita little soupy because, as you said, the towels retain a lot of water and the POP dries REALLY fast when you are dipping and slopping the towels. I found that the decreased window of work time actually helped me because I didn't have the time to nitpick the placement of the towels. It was literaly "throw and go" with my build. The outcome was a really neat texture and natural outcropping look as the plaster and towels settled.
