I have a Lionel 81840 UP Ca4 smoking caboose that does not smoke very well - just a very small whisp of smoke - almost not visable. Any ideas of how to increase the smoke output before I open it up? Thanks Bruce

They don't have a fan in them and the wisp is kind of prototypical. I could be wrong about that particular one, but all mine are that way.

Mine too.
My thought would still be open the units air intake hole slightly. Possibly even adding an air scoop to the floor to force feed the cabin air when under way (would only work one direction of travel)
Or just add a fan to the floor, lol.
Mine don't smoke much nor should they. It's not a Locomotive, I too was disappointed with output until brain engaged and thought about what it would be in real life. Realized can save money by just leaving smoke off. Of course to compensate turned smoke output to max on steamers
Its neat on a siding. While moving at any real speed, its so hard to tell.
Gunrunner puts an MTH HO scale fan driven smoke unit in them. I guess he gets great results. I'd love to but already have too much stuff to do
On a siding or sitting idle its a cool touch though. The effect trumps "realistic" amounts of smoke being the max. IMO.
The ho fan unit is a great idea for use while running.
But how much smoke is seen prototypically depends on the fuel, its quality, and quantity, temp., temp. outside, etc.. Ever burn wet wood, lol.
