Have been collecting and running tinplate trains for about the last year and a half, Lionel, Marx, American Flyer. Most recently Unique Art (cool set found on OGR forsale forum).

Anyway, at the Syracuse Train show this weekend I purchased an AA Marx set 6000 southern pacific tinplate set. I have another identical set that runs great.

This new set though is giving me trouble. I took her all apart, cleaned everything oiled, lubed and put her on the test track, ran great. so I put her on the board and I can't get her to pull even two cars. It sits there and spins her wheels. I've tried cleaning the wheels again, cleaning track and I am at a lose why this set won't pull. HELP!!

The fiber insulator that holds the center pickup can warp, causing the center pickup to sit too low. That lifts the wheels.

Also look at the center pin on the fiber insulator. That must be centered in the pickup hole.

Also feel the spring tension on the pickup. Someone might have put in a spring that is too strong.

Compare it with the one that works well.

Also check how the motor is mounted. These have been known to get put together wrong not allowing the motor to pivot correctly. There should be a large OD washer between the motor mount and the shell. Then a shoulder screw going through the shell and washer screwing into the motor mount. Also the center plate the the front of the motor mount pivots across can get bent causing misalignment or binding.

thanks Steve, there IS a large washer. I had that off when servicing the motor. I tried adjusting the motor mount plate up front. I may have to look at that again, Thanks
