I know this has been discussed many times and the comparison of Homasote, foam and other materials discussed. However, I just had an EPDM roof put on my shop and they use an underlayment that is easily worked yet seems somewhat denser than Homasote. I would imagine that it has some good properties for stability given it is directly under roofing materials. Has anyone had experience with this material, both positive and negative and know of normal sources for purchase. Did not see any in the big box stores although I didn't ask either.

You'd probably need to go to a building or roofing supply company for these underlayments. Did you see a brand or product name?
Some are foam products others are a coated fiberous material. I thought about using the coated product 25 years ago but didn't like the odor or possible flammability of it. The underlayments have evolved since then but I don't see an upside over homasoat.
No brand on the small piece I have. It seems denser than Homasote which I would think it would lead to better mechanical fastening than Homasote, Fire ratings have really changed over time, I noticed Homasote is fire rated for construction. Odor, none detected on this small piece.

My experience with Homasote is that it's excellent at retaining screws. It also does a great job with the sound deadening, which was the object of the exercise.
