Lots of us out there love switchers (shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters, etc.), so lets keep #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling!

We're pulling for safety this weekend with our Conrail MP15 Safety Train!


The ABC has arrived at the interchange track with a little help from a Conrail MP15.

Good morning Rich and happy Switcher Saturday!

Pictured below are two of my Atlas O models of EMD SW8 diesel switcher locomotives - New York Central 9606 and Conrail 8606. Actually, they are models of the same locomotive.

New York Central 9606 was built in February 1952. It was renumbered to NYC 8606 in 1966 and became Penn Central 8606 in 1968. It became Conrail 8606 in 1976 and was retired in 1991.

My Atlas O model of NYC 9606 is also pictured with NYC standard wood caboose 19654 made by MTH, and the model of Conrail 8606 is shown with Conrail N20 extended vision caboose 22131 made by Atlas O. The Conrail caboose was built by International Car Company in 1970 for the Reading Railroad and was transferred to Conrail on April 1, 1976.

The NYC switcher model was one of the early versions of the EMD SW8/9 made by Atlas O. The Conrail version was announced in 2005 with expected delivery in January 2006. It has TMCC and Lionel Railsounds 4.0 with MSRP $369.95. My model of NYC 9606 has never been run but the model of Conrail 8606 has considerable operating time pulling short freights on my layout.

The Electro-Motive Division of General Motors produced 309 SW8 locomotives for U.S. railroads between 1950 and 1954. They were equipped with an EMD 567B 8-cylinder supercharged two-stroke diesel engine which developed 800 horsepower.

Good Morning All- Happy SWSat

A couple of new arrivals on the RSJ&B this week. Just took delivery of a B&O work caboose. 

The new employees have cleared background checks and have completed safety training. Here is my Chessie GP-20 # 8463 spotting the new car on the team track sidings. Still waiting for the crane to unload the delivery of pipe for the new water main project in town.

Great posts so far everyone. Welcome back Rich. Tom did and excellent job starting us off last week. Put my PRR 0-4-0 in this week too pulling a short tanker train.

@Melgar- your collection is endless. And never run too. I couldn't resist running stuff after buying it.

Thomas- I see the remnants of the Carrot Festival are still around. Should leave them behind for the Easter Bunny.

Actually, I have only one more EMD SW switcher that I haven't posted on SWSat as yet. But I still do have some steamers and quite a few diesel road switchers that I can post! Maybe the solution is for me to go out and buy some more switchers. Most of my collection has not been run, but many do have a lot of run time.

Yay! SWSat is on!

I'm late posting today because I was at the joint METCA/NYSME show this AM.  A lot of very tempting things at the show. I picked up this Marx 75 ton end cab Whitcomb. Collectors misinterpret it as a GE 70 tonner but it really is closer to the obscure and unsuccessful Whitcomb. An obscure RR I like, the Washington and Old Dominion had one so eventually this will become that.

Here is the prototype to me it looks closer with the sloped front than the GE.

Bob, Fortunately, hosting an International Carrot Festival is a one time gig. No doubt, the Easter Bunny will be  well fed on leftovers as he passes through Everett.

Lots of great action on the RSJ&B today. It is always nice to see your Chessie GP20 at work. Looks like your new crew is earning their keep!

Nice find! I agree, it does look like a good match to the CN prototype you shared.

Yankspride4- Very nice LIRR equipment. Going to have to pay Charlie at Nassau Hobby a visit soon. Those are very nice engines.

Abrail- Thanks, the new crew has jumped right in and should work out fine. We have the crane scheduled to arrive Tuesday just in time for Team Track Tuesday. We will see how they do operating heavy equipment.

BAR GP7 #63- Looks like we both have new hires on the line this week.

Silverlake- nice find. Looks like a neat little switcher.

I'm definitely late for the party this weekend!   I've been running behind all day today playing catch up .... and I could not turn in for the night without making a post on SWSAT.  Wonderful photos everyone!  Rich I love the shot of your 0-8-0!! Nice find Silver Lake!!  Yankspride - very nice LIRR video!!  BAR GP7 63 - wonderful weathering and photos!!  MELGAR - great switchers!!  Steamer - you always manage to come up with fabulous historical photos!! Mike Carusso - got to love an RS1 - great pic!!  Abrail - MP15 K line looks great!!  Tom - great 0-6-0 pic and great use of lump of coal ... yes coal IS coming back!  RSJ818 - wonderful nite shots!!  TNKMARX - that GP30 will be seen coming down the line from 5 miles away with that bright headlight!!  TERRY HUDSON - I love milk trains and DD1s too!!

went to a local show today with my Dad. Lots of trains, and some really good deals. I wasn't there 5 minutes, and my first stop was on the floor looking at a junk box with a sign $1 for everything in box, which I took as $1 each. I heard the dealer say "give me 50 cents for the whole box" He had me at $1. This was the first show that I saw not just one, but two Prewar Lionel switchers for sale. One was way out of my budget, and the other was at the time.

I never thought of running a 44T in passenger service. There was a B&O 44T here on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway. They never used it and ultimately sold it. Would loved to have recorded it. It had Cummins D17000 prime movers 

Nice work and scenery as always!

Thanks so much Lou for your kind words!  Yes the FSJR had to press the 44T into Friday evening commuter service because both the WM H7 Consolidation and the WM BL-2 are out of service.   Since it's spring time a steam generator is not needed so the 44T was a practical solution to the shortage of WM problem.

In actuality the classic Williams 44 toner looks more like a 80 ton locomotive ( at least to me ) so it looks OK my scale MTH Western Maryland passenger cars.  

I ( think ) it was the Pennsy or Reading that used a 44T for a short while on one of their passenger locals ( two cars )  running from suburban Philly to downtown Philly.  I did read this in an issue of Trains magazine once upon a time.  So I figured what the heck .... its a nice use of my Williams classic and again it looks pretty good pulling those cars around the layout.
