It's #SwitcherSaturday time!!!!

Love switchers, shifters, docksiders, yard goats, critters? I know I do and so do the dozens of other folks who have come out each Saturday for the last TWO YEARS to share pictures, videos, stories, and fun!

TWO YEARS?????

Yep! We've now been keeping #SwitcherSaturday (a.k.a. SWSAT) rolling for TWO WHOLE YEARS, what a great time it's been!

Here is the link to the first ever Switcher Saturday:

Here is the link to last year's one year anniversary!

And now for this week's fun!

MNCW/Tom had a good idea for this year's anniversary edition of Switcher Saturday which I'm hoping some of you try to do! If you want to play along, please try to have your posts be "loosely" tied to something railroad related happening anytime in February or mentioning some historic event that is tied to a real
or fake railroad you like or model, like:
example 1. Today in History - February 28 | Library of Congress
example 2. If someone follows the B&O, did you know that the B & O Railroad...
example 3. On February 28, 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad became the first U.S. railway chartered for the commercial transportation of freight and passengers. Investors hoped that a railroad would allow Baltimore, the second largest U.S. city at that time, to successfully compete with New York for western trade. New Yorkers were profiting from easy access to the Midwest via the Erie Canal.

So, in honor of this two year anniversary, here is my "historic event"!

It was 60 years ago today, Saturday, February 18th, 1957, and New York Central #8244 rolled off the Alco assembly line.  It was cold that day, and it was unusual for the team to be working on a Saturday, but they knew this would be the last RS-3 they would ever make, so they worked through the night to finish it almost a whole week early. They also knew Saturday's were special, and this day was even more special since it was seven years to the day since the first RS-3 build began on the line in Febuary of 1950. EMD Geep's be ****ed, this was one good looking engine, and they were very proud of it, and so began the switching life of NYC #8244.

These photos were taken by the Richmond, Chesapeake, Hudson (Ri.C.H.) Yard manager when #8244 arrived late that day. They were recently discovered and this is the first time they have been shared with the public.

20170218-RS3-0320170218-RS3-0220170218-RS3-01

I hope everyone has a nice weekend and thanks to each of you who have helped make this little Saturday adventure so much fun for two years!

All the best...Rich Murnane

p.s. Miss the post on Saturday? NO BIG DEAL, just keep posting pictures of your favorites until the next #SwitcherSaturday

p.s.s. If you missed last week's SWSAT you should really go take a look, it was a ton of fun!

p.s.s.s. A couple fun videos I thought might be worth "re-sharing"!

Two years, this corresponds to the week I pulled the plug on my lousy dial-up internet service.  It was not until Summer that year that got hooked up to a high speed service.  In the mean time kept up with the "Weekend Photo Fun" by going to the local library mid-week.

After getting hooked up again noticed this series and enjoyed.  But kept thinking I only have two or maybe three switchers.

Well I pulled them out.

Happy Anniversary to all my fellow Switcher Saturday posters. When I gave Rich the idea, I should have picked something easier, maybe!

Rich, thanks again for all your work in getting up early on a Saturday to get us started.

I was able to Google "February 18th Pennsylvania Railroad" and my computer came up with a list that included an old Railroad Gazette edition which included these 2 stories:

#1 About profanity...for all you guys that dabble in profanity, "Back in the Day" you would be banned from the Pennsylvania Railroad shops! Or at least that was the idea...no follow up story to say if the ban worked.

PRR #2 Capture

#2 The East River Tunnels were under construction with talk of "2 ft. thick tunnels," when this edition was released.

feb 18th

Speaking of tunnels, on a slightly smaller scale and of somewhat less importance (?), there is a vintage Lionel tunnel in the background of my picture here that I thought the colors appropriately looked a bit like Birthday Cake (using Adobe Photoshop Express). That is my #231 with its slightly bent (upwards) headlight.

Here is a somewhat rare double posting...where would we be without one of my useless poems?

Switcher Saturday is Two Years old today!

Did you all know…Rich does this for little or no pay!

Thanks EVERYONE for all that you post,

Your locomotives make this work- coast to coast.

Rich somewhere said he will keep posting until he is at least a hundred and one,

At this point he probably still has around 80,000 posts in him, before he will be done!

Keep those Switcher pics coming, especially Pennsy steam,

And as we learned today the PRR banned potty mouths, so keep it clean!

Congratulations Rich and the other switcher thread guys on your second anniversary. Just a few weeks until Spring so splendid time for a Southern Pacific Wildflower Special fan excursion. The little-traveled McKittrick branch in the California coastal foothills near the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley is scenic this time of year--especially those fields around the Buttonwillow station and the tar pits (think more famous La Brea) near McKittrick. However, the rails are lightweight so a smaller and lighter locomotive is needed. A Mogul or the colorful No. 1277, a San Francisco-based 0-6-0 painted lady would be perfect. There is a turning wye at the end of the line, 47 miles from Bakersfield, allowing the engineer and fireman a decent view of a posy or two too.

Happy 2 SWSAT!!!

It was seven years ago today that a Wingerter Halo Belt Line train, lead by a tiny beep switcher, derailed in the bustling town of Wingerter's Crossing.

February 18, 2010

swsat-2

Early this morning, another WHBL freight train derailed. This time at the South Main Street crossing. The train was carrying pigs on their way to market. Out from the wreckage scurried a virtual infestation of pigs. The animals scampered all over town and caused quite a commotion.

swsat-4

One of the porkers was stopped as it made a rather bold attempt to enter the Main Street Market. The market's owner, Butch Erum, stopped the creature dead (literally) in its tracks. Butch will be having a weekend pork chop sale.

swsat-1

Following the accident, the WHBL engineer and conductor were detained and are expected to be charged with Reckless Operations, Disturbing the Peace, twenty-two counts of Failure to Properly Leash an Animal, illegal parking of a freight train, as well as numerous violation of the health department's new "NO-dodo" ordinance.

Sye Lance, a spokesman for the railroad, refused to comment on the event.

swsat-3

As expected, the Wingerter's Crossing City Council is up in arms over the incident and has promised to launch an endless investigation. "When we're done looking into this matter," said councilmen Les Moore,"I plan to make that railroad pay!"

Authorities have asked that any citizen spotting one of the fugitive beasts contact Butch Erum at the market.

Yay! SWSat is On!

I always enjoy this little subset community of Switcher fans. Great post so far guys. Congratulations on the anniversary. Rich thanks for keeping it fun. Tom any time your poetry shows up is always a treat. Love those Power Pack LIRR pics. PRRRONBH wow quite a PRR switcher collection. SIRT I love that PC RS11 great job on the weathering.

As far as Historic dates I fought myself over an accurate date versus what I wanted to post. And what I wanted won. Feb 9 1979 was the release of the movie Warriors. It is a stylized and very silly movie about a gang that was falsely accused of killing a gang leader at a playground near the old Putnam Division in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. They have to fight other gangs all the way back to thier safe turf in Coney Island. There is so much riding the subway that it seems a homage to the subway. In my research I found that instead of the Bronx that early scene was filmed at 96 st and Riverside. Oh well. I'm posting it anyway.

As far a Switcher pics I pulled an engine I've never posted on SWSat before for today. Here is my Lionel NYC RS11. It looks pretty good for a 17 year old engine.

This MTH Switcher is performing it's duties on the old Ocean County Society of Model RR's layout in New Jersey. The basement of that church held many a fun run night for me. Thanks OCSMRR's!

Here's another one from the OCSMRR's layout - my stable of Plymouth Switchers heads out with a short coal consist in tow.

Happy Anniversary Switcher Saturday!!!  Thanks so much Rich for keeping this great thread going each and every Saturday!!   I, as many others, look forward to this thread each week.  Thanks, too, to all who regularly contribute photos and information here each week.  Let go for year 3!!!

In celebration of this wonderful thread, SWSAT, I'll post a different switcher photo each day this week.  If anyone wants to join me, please feel free to do so.

Did You Know - Rail Facts

*On Feb 15, 1901 the Baltimore & Lehigh Railroad and the York Southern Railroad merged to become the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad ( Ma&Pa )

*The Western Maryland Railway first employed their two new BL2 locomotives in helper service.

*The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was the first US railroad to purchase and use an articulated locomotive.  It was an 0-8-8-0 ( a very large switcher? ) used in pusher service & yard work and was nick named Old Maude.

*The first US president to travel by steam train was Andrew Jackson.  He boarded the B&O train on June 6, 1833 at Ellicott Mills, Md.  station ( now call Ellicott City and still stands today & is part of the B&O museum ) and traveled a distance of 13 miles to Baltimore's Mount Clare Station, which is now part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum.

Here are most of the switchers of the Free State Junction Railway whose crews posed with the locos to salute Switcher Saturday's Second Anniversary!! Here's a former switcher.  It was built in the mid-late 1800s as an 0-4-0 by Manchester and worked in a Portland Cement quarry owned by Thomas Edison.  It was given to Henry Ford and rebuilt in the Rouge Plant locomotive shops in 1932 to resemble a Mason 4-4-0 for his new museum.  It was rebuilt for service in the 1970's and has been modernized over the years to more closely resemble a locomotive rebuilt in the 1930's.

Thanks , Ron

For today's entertainment we have one of the first trains on the first interim carpet central at its new location.  The crew was reluctant to set out initially due to the multiple sightings of a giant running alongside the right of way. Fortunately the giant turned out to be a railfan!!

As a bonus, we also have the initial run of the carpet central, featuring the Stephen Express!!

Congratulations to Rich Murnane for having started and continued Switcher Saturday for two years. It is my favorite thread on the OGR forum.

My subject this week is my Atlas O EMD SW9 B&M #1223 Diesel switcher locomotive which I purchased when it was first released, sometime around 1999. This model is the first of many such Atlas O switchers that I have purchased since then.

A review of this model was published in O Gauge Railroading magazine in February 1999, authored by Fred M Dole, with assistance from Bill Culliton and Barry Lewis. According to the article, SW9 switchers were built by EMD between 1950 and 1954.
