I visited the Red Caboose Motel countless of times as a child during our family visits to Strasburg in the early 80s.  I went back with my wife around 2002 and the motel had seen better days.  I've been doing some reading lately as I'm planning on take my young kids to Strasburg and possibly the Red Caboose Motel for the first time.  The motel has been under new management since 2005.  Some cabooses have been remodeled and some haven't.  The mixed reviews on tripadvisor.com are evident of that.  There aren't many threads on this great Lancaster PA place since the new board was created.

Please share your experiences here and, if possible, include the year you visited and in which caboose you stayed (number or roadname).

Thanks!

I stayed there on Thursday and Friday night in early December, before and after the TCA bus trip to NYC layouts. My caboose was clean and comfortable. Breakfast in the Pennsy P70 coach converted to a dining car on Saturday morning was GREAT! The dining car will open this Saturday (the 24th). There will be a big re-opening event next Saturday (the 31st). I think the TCA Museum will be open, too. Red Caboose Motel posts on Facebook.

Our family has had a good time each time we've stayed at the Red Caboose. The first couple of times we were in a caboose that was not remodeled and things were fine, the remodeled caboose seemed to have some extra shelving removed but was updated. Folks just need to put themselves in the state of mind that the cabooses are about like cabins..not the Hampton Inn. The best part is waking up at dawn and watching the sunrise over the Amish countryside. Again, adjust your expectations and you'll be fine and enjoy the little things that come with staying in an old caboose.

Each time we've eaten in the restaurant, the food has been good, hot and plentiful. The service ranged from super to so so as they hire local young ladies who sometimes don't put all the effort they can in their job. It's really something to have lunch their and watch the Strasburg RR ramble pass.

The petting zoo, the grounds, and the gift shop layout are neat to stroll around in between activities. I always seem to find a little model item or a DVD to bring home.

It's also nice to be able to railfan from the grounds and be able to walk to the TCA Museum as well.

Does the place need updating...yes. Is it luxury accommodations? No.. Each time was fun and convenient to all that the Strasburg area has to offer.
