Well, it is obvious that picking soundproofing is like picking a wife, everybody has different ideas.

2001 is one of my favorite movies (And I love all 4 books.). Wish I had know you were in Laramie, could have said hi this summer while I was there visiting my grandparents (They live about 7 miles north of town.).
As for sound, I was reminded how decent my setup is as I put FasTrack on tile floor for around the tree, and even with the 3 car train as slow as it can go, it is very loud and I have to turn it off just to talk to someone in the same room. I need to get around to making a Christmas tree loop like I did my layout top, but then I have to find a place to put it.

Sinclair is a big name here, as you know. I toyed with the idea of modeling the Sinclair refinery, but decided it was way too much for my modest talents.

You can see why I liked the acoustical ceiling tile so much now, it was solid with some give to it, does an incredible job, unfortunately it is not cheap any more. I got mine free when Westinghouse left East Pittsburgh years ago, it was finally falling apart after 30 years, so I discarded it. I am going to look at Home Depot for the PolyPro EPS Insolation, if CAL had good luck with it, I may try it. Cal can you drill thru this Poly Pro EPS Insolation without it totally degrading? DR Joe I can't go the squishy backing route for what I need to accomplish engineering wise, my 2nd and 3rd levels need to sit on 2x4 type Trestling, the squishy stuff will not work. Hoping the PolyPro EPS Insolation will be firm enough to do the job.

CALNNC, Lowes sells a product called Insulfoam R-Tech. I believe it is the same EPS insulation product as Home Depots PolyPro. It is the type of foam made from thousands of little white foam balls. They add a sheet of foil to one side and a sheet of plastic for a vapor barrier to the other. The foil makes it difficult to cut with a hot knife, but it may help as a ground plane for Lionel command system if a ground wire is attached to it. It cuts with any type of knife, but then sheds the little static charged balls that cling to everything. At one time you could buy 4 x 8 sheets without the facing but I haven't seen it sold like that in a long time, other then the pre-cut pieces that fit between wall studs. Does what I'm describing sound like the same thing. I still have a long way to go on my basement layout and may try substituting with this instead of Homasote sandwiched between plywood.
I am probably going to give up on Fastrack. When I setup the Christmas layout it was ridiculously loud even with a carpet pad, carpet, and snow blanket. I pulled it up and put up the K-line track. I could have both lines running and still hold a conversation. I have fair amount of it. More 42" curves would be nice, as would some 54". I have 31" , 42", and 72" switches. Hopefully I can keep getting more on flea bay or at shows or maybe some one will get the tooling and make more.
I have a boatload of FT that I need to sort and count. LHSs have said they would be interested at least for store credit. I certainly don't want to keep storing it.
It kinda sucks as I got good at automating things with the FT and all its PnP but I know how to do it with tube track. I may even go to Menards for track and go old school in places if I need to.
