A TVS is for the protection of the trains & accessories electronics circuitry, the breaker is for protection of the transformer & wiring.

There is nothing really unique about using a ZW-L that would dictate using TVS protection or not, and it is really more dependent on the type(s) of equipment you are running. Either way, it's cheap insurance to use them strategically.

Rob, Pretty much as I thought.  Primary concern is the electronics in the engines.  I know it would be most effective to install the TVS' in the engine itself.  But, I know they will never be on a different layout.  So want them to be as close to the track as possible.  (Only running Conv, and TMCC/Legacy.)  The Ckt Breakers will be on each leg of the transformer as well.  Agree it is cheap insurance, especially for a friends layout.
