As a transportation industry professional, I've found most films built around a transport component regardless of mode are fairly well detached from reality. "Unstoppable", the "Speed" movies and "Snakes on a Plane" are a few recent examples which come to mind.  In such cases, there isn't much of a movie to sell to the public unless liberties are taken.

I personally wasn't thrilled with "Unstoppable" but some of my train buddies loved it to the point of even wanting models of the locomotives. I know "Airplane" rubbed a lot of people the wrong way but, even as someone who has a passion for all things transportation,  I think it's one of the most entertaining movies ever made and I laugh my butt off every time I watch it. To each his own, I guess.

Pretty much SOP.......I worked in NASCAR licensing for a number of years.......ever hear of Days of Thunder, Stroker Ace, Six Pack or Talledega Nights???? ALL made the sport look really bad. ALL of these were more stupid than Unstoppable could ever hope to be. (Six Pack had a group of children doing pit stops during a race) I just watch the trains and turn the brain off.

NASCAR a sport....lol!   The wheels on those cars go 'round and 'round, round and round, round and round....

Agreed...not a sport.  But only one million times closer than any 'PRO' stick or ball game in the world. I've attended NBA, MLB, NFL, Golf etc....none can hold a candle. thx

What is really interesting is its roots. Moonshiners actually paved the groundwork for NASCAR to exist. While I don't like NASCAR, I found that little tidbit incredibly interesting.

All sports have varying amounts of skill and physical ability required. Comparing one to another is a path down a slippery slope of endless debate. I've even heard one opinion, which I don't necessarily agree with but understand, that claims most of what we call sports are actually games, requiring an umpire or referee to ensure fair play. That opinion claimed hunting and fishing are closer to true sports, requiring the individual to adhere to the rules and behave in a sportsmanlike fashion. The problem with that is that, as a hunter/fisherman, I've observed far too much unsportsmanlike behavior in the field. But the argument illustrate the futility of pointing fingers at "non-sports". Closer to home, some in our hobby take umbrage at

our trains being called toys. It goes on and on....................

Polar Express ..You either believe or you don't

Not a prototypical roof. Crap, trucks fell apart; better return it while I can.th-163

A Hollywood train derailment calls for a special team; but Ol' Billy Boy didn't work cheap.

The snakes are under the trains, not in them.  The tracks are where I'd hunt for snakes as a kid.  If I didn't catch snakes, I'd at least catch a train rolling by.

Look, I caught one!

....Almost worse than comic book fan-boys debating which hero or villian craps fastest, etc; but twice as entertaining

I find the more BS in a movie, the easier it is to dismiss the BS and laugh. Action movies fall into this catagory for me.

Serious drama? Simply more drama to be dismissed. The book is always better anyhow.

My outlook is skewed though; I couldnt write fiction (yea, 3.5gpa or better and I almost got held back grades and almost didn't graduate kinda "can't"). I can spit out jokes or an idea now (finally) but I can't carry it alone. Maybe that's why fantasy fiction is more interesting for me than any dramatic fiction... I can't.
