I like modern tank cars. I also like to have some representatives of the different models. I remember the basic form modeled by the LGB tank car so it caught my eye. I did not check the exact scale of it. Although LGB uses some superior plastic on most models, the top handrails like to break in handling this car so be careful!
The LGB plastic trucks have a number of weaknesses so they had to go. The newest KD 100 ton trucks were due for a test on my RR so I picked them. They roll well and add a lot of weight where this car really needs it, down low. I also had to add KD couplers so the car would mate anywhere with the rest of my RR.
I think if I had the extra patience I would also custom make the top of the car's platform and handrails in brass for better strength. Maybe next winter?
The LGB car sits at a decent height for me and I didn't wish to cut it anymore than I did. So I chose the middle thickness shims in the kit that retain that height.
(If I were to make a more realistic model double checking the height, I might cut the coupler pocket right up into that frame or even replace that too with brass. The trouble with that is the rest of the brands would all need lowering to match this.)
I replaced the truck screws with 1/2" long ones.
Using the KD height gauge shows right where to cut out for the KD couplers.
I have made these mods to about 5 of these cars now.
