I have a lionel postwar magnetraction rock island alco diesel and the shell has a crack. I could find ebay replacement but I saw some WBB shells at Western Depot and was wondering if the mod to fit is possible and/or easy? I feel sure someone has done the mod to get the extra detail.

In almost every case the shells will interchange. Please note that I said, "almost". The folks at the Western Depot are more than willing to assist you.

I can tell you first hand that the shells will fit a lionel chassis, but lionel will NOT fit williams chassis.The williams shell is about 1/16 inch wider as is their chassis. This is why lionel will not fit williams chassis. Then there is the issue of lionel using 3 posts to mount the shell and williams uses 4 posts. The williams shell will screw down using the back two posts but there is no way to mount the front unless you make a new center post. Over all, I say don't waste your money and look for a good used lionel shell.
