I recently just switched over from HO scale to O scale after being away from O scale for 20 years.  My plan is to use the MTH Z4000 and the MTH dcs remote system together.  I will only have MTH proto 3 locomotives. My question is, it appears that i need to connect the Z4000 to my tiu input 1 and then connect output 1 to my bus line. Then when operating, set the handle on the z4000 to get 20 volts and then run my locos using the dcs system remote controls. Am i thinking correctly ? Also do i need to have a power source connected to the tiu at the auxiallry power connection using for example a Z1000 power brick ?  Or will the Z4000 be the only power source connected to the tiu ?

Greg,

Am i thinking correctly ?

Yes, however, as Dan posted above, try 18 volts rather than 20 volts.

Also do i need to have a power source connected to the tiu at the auxiallry power connection using for example a Z1000 power brick ?

No, however, it's better to do so if you ever plan to use more than 1 TIU channel to run trains. Otherwise, any time power to Fixed #1 is lost (fuse blows, etc.), all TIU channels will lose the DCS signal.
