Terrific photos everyone.  Thank you all for sharing with us.

Last weekend my family spent the day watching trains around the Altoona area.

At Horseshoe Curve we caught this 60Z steel slab train with three engines on the head end, and two helper sets aka "a four-banger" shoving on the rear.

Heading down to Altoona, here's a shot of the 18N derailment site with ALTO tower in the foreground. In September, 18N derailed 17 auto racks at CP Altoona, fouling all three mains, and causing significant delays.  You can still see several of the wrecked racks dragged to the side of the right of way.

Moving to the east side of Altoona, here's a view westward at ROSE interlocking where a crew van arrived and six helper sets were lined up on the track closest to main #2.  Track work was ongoing both east and west of Altoona, so we never saw the parade of west bounds the six helper sets foretold.

While at ROSE, this scene caught our attention.  My wife asked me why they had a junkyard in the railroad yard.  Interestingly, all the wrecked cars were shiny, clean Hondas and Acuras, and white GMC vans.  Apparently this is a staging area for the vehicles involved in the 18N derailment.

Finally we stopped by Cassandra, only seeing one train; a Herzog work train headed east.

Like the Hills Brothers car. The MJB car is a Weaver that was done for OGR Magazines 24th Anniversary. I've been trolling eBay for more as up until 2 weeks ago I didn't know they had done that many anniversary cars.

Thank you for all the "Likes" (I love 'em all !) to the following for my "A Few Mini-moments" posting for this week:

This weekend's photo is courtesy of my 4 1/2 year old grandson. We let him take some photos yesterday on our trip to the Smithsonian in DC, and he loved it. Today, down running trains, he wanted to take train pictures "like at a train show." So, here's 4 1/2 year old Floyd's view of the layout.

I can tell you grew up on the wrong side of the tracks. Your wife moved you up to the right side. I love it, great photos. I always liked your garage layout too since I also have a garage layout. We got to make do with what ever space we have.

Thanks for the kind words.  Means a lot, especially coming from a fellow modeler who's been "banished" to the garage!    Like you said, we make do with what we have.  I keep telling myself it's better than nothing.

Lionel Chessie System Boxcar 6-9740

I'be always thought this car was funny. I have one myself  and I first thought it was a factory mistake. It is a Chessie car with MEC markings. I never knew Maine Central was ever part of the Chessie System. MPC came out with two MEC cars at around the same time so I figure it was just an accidental carry over from one of those.

I almost forgot there is a Chessie System Hi Cube car from the same MPC era that also has the MEC reporting marks. It is navy blue with a blue door ( unlike  the similar Chessie Hi Cube number 9600 navy blue with a yellow door) and numbered 9629 from 1983-84. At least someone at Lionel was consistent in their mistakes.

Richard,

Awesome scene!!!!!

Although I haven't posted on this thread lately because I've been busy, this is  my favorite thread.

When I take photographs of my layout, I try to get the perspective of someone actually photographing a real train. I also use a Single strong lighting source for deep shadows and secondary bounce to mimic sky lighting.

The engine in the photo is a Railking RS-1 repainted Rutland.

Be sure to check out my weekly thread O Scale Motor Vehicle Chronicle posted Friday mornings.

Trains rumble through there a few times a day, at all hours....always coal.  Last month we were visiting when I heard one approaching, so I ran outside and had my daughter take my picture trackside.  I had my back to the train, as you can see, and so I did not notice the very interesting third engine (I almost said "dummy.") in the lineup.

It wasn't until the train had passed me and I turned to walk back to the house that I saw the BSNF diesel.  This was HUGE for me...only the third time I've ever see one in action...twice on this line and once a few years ago here in Wyckoff along a NYS&W line.  May not seem like  much but when you rarely see one, it's an exciting moment.  And to think I almost missed it!

Mike,  Come to the Midwest some time and I can take you pumpkin hunting.  Its the opposite here.  My son and I are always hunting for the Black Stallions, when we see one we have ben know to chase them  up to 40 miles for good photos.  Nick

I feel blessed living in Memphis, TN where we get PLENTY of BNSF and NS all day long.  Then there are the UP and CN lines too!  The mainline that goes right through the center of the city has a train every 15 minutes (mainly BNSF with some NS and a few CNs).  The Union Pacific stays downtown with Amtrak I think.
