Mark, thank you so so much. It means a lot!! It was a pleasure to see you again. We are so glad John loved it as well. Yes, the layout is much larger then last time you saw it. I'm also glad I got give you those 2 Clive Cussler books!! Your a great promoter for this hobby and that is what we need!!! \

And yes Mark is right, if anyone locally in the Northeast Ohio area hasn't come, please do, photos do not do our museum layout justice. We are the Largest Family owned 3-rail layout in the United States!! So come out and see us!! Look for the Ball field and find the trains.

So after watching my hometown Jets and Giants go down in flames....
Good to check in here to get cheered up again.

So to console myself I just bought a Lionel D&H RS-11 with command. Can't wait to add it to the fleet.

this February a local club, the Appalachian, set up a great layout at the show I attended.  

I'll never forget it...  the consist consisted , I couldn't resist, at least 30 loads of coal.  The admin on duty said the cars were Weaver. I really do not know the model # of the coal hoppers but they Road the track great, followed well with the couplers, and looked great as well.  I believe they were two hoppers.

Since you displayed one, you have any experience you could share with us on the Weaver coal hopper cars??? I enjoy all of your comments...

the major reason I'll not forget the show, wind that day was fierce.  White caps on the Kanawah River.  When I returned home a huge 75 foot pine just missed my train room and laid out our board fence....

Mark, I can't thank you enough. And yes, the Amish whle you were there enjoyed it very much!! We get quite a few each week. They love the trains. They're favorite is Amtrak & the B&O EM-1.

Picked up a couple 675 mechanisms for a five-spot each (as seen in the center photo).  One ran right out of the junk bin; the other refused to go.  Upon closer examination, I noticed a lack of drum in the E unit, so I bypassed it and the little indefinite buzzes along quite cheerfully,  thanks.  ^.^  May use the mechanisms as the basis for a boxcab switcher or two...

Would you have any wheels available to replace a Joy Line engine wheels.?

Painted the turntable control cab and added track to the bridge. Still need to add a few details (like extra ties on the bridge track) and it's ready to install. Then I can put the whole works on my layout. Oh and then I have to build an area for the whisker storage tracks. So still lots more work ahead.

Well, that's a Lionel mechanism above.  As for Joy Line, don't have any.  Do you have a pic of the engine?  Maybe a Lionel wheel can be fitted...

Regarding Weaver hopper cars: I have over 6 of them mostly bought new at my local hobby shop for $15 ea. I still buy them when i can find them for less than $20 on Fleabay, etc. They're good smooth runners, even those with the plastic trucks. I brought each one up to about 15 ounces total weight and made the coal loads. Sorry for the out of focus photo.

Does staring at your layout count?

I did this today and found that a couple sections of Warrenville are getting a little old in the tooth (over 15 years for Cape Warrenaveral and over 20 for a farm area section) and could use updating and refreshing.

I'm gonna start with a small expansion of Cape Warrenaveral - and fix its #175 Rocket Launcher (the vibrator string needs to either be replaced or re-routed on the pulleys), removal of the non space/military related #264 fork lift platform and replacing it with a #470 IRBM Missile launcher (actually, I'd prefer to find a couple launching mechanisms from this accessory or the 6650 IRBM missile launching car, and use them instead of a whole #470 - something else to look for at York next month), updating grassy/wooded areas with "asphalt" and general clean up.

First step will be the movement of the forklift loader from Cape Warrenaveral to the Warrenville Yards where it will replace a #164 Log Loader (I have no idea where I'll move that one to) and some general maintenance in that area.

When those areas are done, the farm area near Lisa-Marieville needs refreshing and updating. Maybe, if I can squeeze it in, I'll add a short siding and move its operating horse corral off the mainline to it.

Fall and winter layout projects - YEAH!

Making some trees.  I made these 2 the last few nights, from floral wire and tape. The taller one I have not added the leaves yet. Not sure if I like the method or looks of the shorter one. The heights are 12 and 7 inches.  Once in there place the roots will be set into the pink prairie.  Nick T.

Finished the sidings, remembered to take out some more passenger cars to ensure they could pass each on on the slight curvature in the storage yard tracks.... Fortunately only had to make minor adjustments in the curves of the first 2 tracks nearest to the table edge. 

Then backed trains down each of the stub tracks, everything worked.....

 Then on ballasting, and then more ballasting....  finally decided to run some trains and take some pictures...

Dave,  the Ross switches do have the head blocks, but I have some that I purchased 2nd hand that had been cut off on one or both sides.... 

I have had good success just using either old Ross ties from "track cut-off" or making up some "tie stock", on the table saw.   I then pre-drill them, extend the roadbed with thin 1/4 inch plywood and usually drive some small nails through the pre-drilled holes to hold them in place while the wood glue dries.   The short tie extensions on top of the 1/4 inch or 5 mm plywood make a great foundation for the ground throws....

It's safer to get a piece of stock  3/4 x 2 or 3 about 8 to 12 inches long then set the fence to the tie dimensions and only feed 1/2 the 12 length to the blade, shut it down then rotate it 90 degrees and make your width or height cut... then you can cross cut with a small razor saw....  This is far safer than feeding really small pieces of wood that might get kicked back..   Plus doing this way won't require that you have a zero clearance insert in your saw eliminating any gaps around the blade.
