A train master I work with was given this by his Dad. To me, it looks like a Marklin brand with Tyco style power pack.
anyone have a clue what this actually is?

"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Marklin has a middle dot system which is like our O gauge 3 rail so basicly it's 3 rail also

It is N scale. 'Postage stamp trains' was the moniker before the letter 'N' was established. Late 1960's. Coupler is the give-away.

Postage Stamp Trains were marketed by Aurora as their entry into the developing N Gauge market back in the late 1960's. The bulk of the products were made by Minitrix.

These were packaged by aurora and manufactured by Minitrix, There was also an N gauge bus sytem under the postage stamp name that was made by Faller, another West German manufacturer of toy train accessories. Arnold rapido did a similar thing and was marketed as Revell Rapido about the same time then as parkway trains. A huge variety of sets were packaged by both companies, I think I have in excess of 80 boxed sets with variations on rolling stock, packaging, etc.
