I was watching some train movies today with my 2 year old son and was thinking I would love to take him out west in a few years to ride some of the great tourist railroads.  Then I was thinking of all the great places I would love to visit in our country and what Railroads are a must ride before I die.

Now I am pretty young so with the right planning me and my son could ride many of these.

Places I must visit:

Durango and Silverton RR

Any trip behind the UP 844 and UP 3985

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR

Cass Scenic RR

Any trip behind the 4449 - I really kick myself for not riding behind her when she was in MI for Trainfestival 2009

The Western Maryland Scenic

Railroads I have been on but must ride again with my Son

Any trip behind the 1225

Any trip behind the 765 - Me and my wife did the double header 1225-765 in 2009 and had a blast, technically my son rode this with us as my wife was pregnant with him at the time.

Huckelberry RR

Greenfield Village

Strasburg RR

The New Hope and Ivyland RR

So I know there are many other tourist rail roads and must ride behind locomotives.  What should I add to this list and what is on your list?

On deck next month:

English sleeper train from Glascow to London

The Caledonian, the Scottish steamer used in Harry Potter movies

London subway

Future rides:

Chinese train to Tibet, over the Himalayas

Los Colorados --Huasco Ferronor, train through the Atacamba volcanic desert in northern Chili.  Said to be the most desolate place on earth that has train tracks.

Moscow subway--art deco decadence and one of Stalin's crown jewels!

I have yet to ride an Amtrak train.

Kent in SD

I have been to Cass, Strasburg, New Jersey, Gettysburg prior to the steam incident, East Broad Top, Maryland Midland's short passenger excursion when they had the Green SD engine back then. And a few others I may not recollect.

I have worked around engines in trucking many times while they did their work and I did mine. Eyes up and ears open/safety first is a rule. I have caught the T1 a time or three as it went through several steam trips in the area at the time. (As well as the 844, 3985 -did I write that right?) and some others.

I don't necessarily have a "Bucket list" having been living a rather quiet life accommodating my medical challenges. If I did, there would be three:

Cotton Belt 819, NKP 765, Green-brier 617 (I am not sure of the number) along with a number of assorted smaller engines too many to list. Maybe Strasburg might be able to restore and run the D class 4-4-0 again someday if the materials and labor is not too costly.

Cheers.

Ain't ever going to happen. That engine is owned by the state of Pennsylvania and according to them, it will "destroy the historical fabric" if it were restored and run again. It is clear, based on past indications, they are not willing to let it or any other engines in the PRR collection go. Not to mention the engine is rather unpractical for the Strasburg's operations. If I'm not mistaken, Strasburg RR CEO Linn Moedinger has tried, at least once, to trade equipment for the engine but with no luck.

Maybe one day but not anytime soon...

1. The East Broad Top.

2. The new high speed line between Chicago and St Louis ( once it's finished)

3. The South Shore all the way to South Bend ( I went as far as Michigan City and the street running was way cool)

4. The Age of Steam ( not open to the public)

5 Steamtown ( again) Once the Boston and Maine steamer is done.

I rode the ill fated excursion that suffered a "hard coupling" and was prematurely cancelled en route. This was after we nearly had heat stroke in the coaches while waiting for a photo shoot to take place. That was a real on board drama..ceiling panels falling down, lamps. Hopefully less drama next time.

I rode the Capital Limited, the Burlington to Denver, the Electroliner..it's the trains I never rode that are gone..The Lake Cities, Phoebe Snow..The Mountaineer, The Owl ..the list is endless.

This year, we are finally going to ride the Indian Pacific and the Ghan.

Some day, Rocky Mountaineer, Paris- Venice Orient Express.

Back when we were newly married, in 1975, we caught the train from Paris to Venice on a regular service compartment train. It was summer, we shared the compartment with an Italian guy and an American/Italian guy. We sat up all night, there was a full moon and the trip through the alps and by lakes was memorable, and we had great company, sharing food , drinks and stories all the way.

Bob, I have done both. In italy, across to Trieste, and down to Rome, very nice. In the UK, many times, London to Liverpool, Edinburgh, Manchester, etc. been on a few steam excursions in Wales. Get a Brit Rail pass and get going, but not this year with the London Olympics on!
