I think the high drivered Pacifics and Hudsons are the grandest, most elegant but powerful, most well proportioned engine type that lends itself to leading a classy passenger train.  A 4-8-4 is more of a brute, which is beauty in it's own way, the J is the epitome of using that wheel arrangement and making it look good, but the high stepping Pacifics and Hudsons decked out in a fancy color scheme, that is my vote.

"Small" engines:  The C&O Mikados and Pacifics with flying pumps, brow mounted

Elescos, and Vanderbilts.  They meet my image of brute power, designed to get the job done, as does the sixteen drivered D&RGW articulated just offered by Third Rail, for a large engine.  Like c.sam, for diesels: the early E's and the Alco PA's, which are sleek and flowing and quite the opposite in appearance and presentation than the steamers I have cited.

My top ten in no particular order:  

 

EL SDP45

UP SD70M with phase one cab and flared radiators.

AMC 2-8-4s

N&W J class

C&O 2-10-4s

EMD E-units except the E7

CR SD80MACs 

US Steel Roads SD38-2s ( B&LE, EJ&E, DM&IR)

Indiana Rail Road SD 9043MAC.

I realize now that the first Super Chief's were E units. I have black & white photos of that first Super Chief near Prescott, Arizona. The nose looked a lot like a Doodle Bug. Only dressed up with more stainless steel. The consist was all heavyweights, eight of them. I think the photo dates around 1936. It was the Santa Fe 19L engine.

My favs are: I have models of all engines listed. 

 

Diesels-F units in almost any paint schemes.

           E units- love the Art Deco look

           ES44AC's- big, Bad and powerful

           Sd70ace- same as above

 

Steam- Lionel legacy UP 844 northern, best engine lionel has ever built

           B&O EM1 great lines for a very large engine, looks better IMO then the big boy.

           UP H7, great looking big engine. Love all the pipeing. 

           Milw.Rd 4-6-4 F7 Hiawatha, great Art Deco look

           UP challenger, nice proportions for such a long engine

           UP big boy, a favorite but not the best looking IMO 

           UP 9000 clase, huge amount of drivers, looks out of balance IMO.

That Santa Fe EA set is so gorgeous ....it defies words!  Same can be said of the B&O version.  The later shovel noses would lose some of that pure simplicity and delicate beauty.  Can you imagine these with a matched set of stainless cars whipping across the Arizona desert????  There are loads of good looking lokkies out there, but I believe these units take the cake !
