Title of the thread says it all.  I'll start off with my very short list of things I really thought we'd see.  I'm not planning to buy lots of stuff anyway in 2017, but I would have found a way to fit these purchases in if they were offered:

  • An Aux Tender for the Freedom Train's GS-4.
  • Chessie Steam Special passenger cars.  I told Harry and Bill Henning I'd buy their Chessie T-1 on display in the store, if the new catalog had the matching set of cars.  Come on, Lionel.  These would have helped dealers move a few locomotives!
  • Great Northern "Empire Builder" passenger set/cars.  True... 3rd Rail is currently taking reservations for their version.  But it would have been interesting to see Lionel go head-to-head with Scott on this.  Just wasn't meant to be.  Instead Lionel went with a Burlington Northern offering.  Same territory... but not for me.

I guess we'll have to wait for Volume 2!!!  Now when does that come out again???

-Any cars with sound!!! (I'm still pushing for some vision NYC milk cars to go with the Niagara when it finally makes a catalog)

*** I will say that I was pleasantly surprised to see the swinging bell included on the S2 Electrics in the catalog . I think it is a feature that has not been used enough! I had planned or ordering one anyway but now I will be eagerly anticipating its arrival.

The auxiliary tool tender for the T1 Freedom Train engine.    The real engine pulled one that was converted from a NYC Mohawk water tender into a tool/parts carrying tender.   It still survives as far as I know.   Lionel already has the Mohawk tender,   so it shouldn't be that difficult to produce.

Didn't see new offerings in Milwaukee Road other than a PS-2 Hopper car.  Would be nice to see a Hiawatha offered with Legacy.  Its been offered in the MTH Book, and not difficult to locate in Premeier, Imperial, or tinplate.  I was looking to see if Lionel would offer a Hiawatha with the Legacy.  I'll keep waiting for that.  I purchased alot in motive power in 2016 with a couple preorders still on the way.    ....I  can use a break.

Other items I observed:

Lionmaster Locomotives out:  Not that I was hoping for it.

I really thought passenger cars for the Reading T1's would be shown.  I think some of those who purchased one would like some type of passenger cars.

Its still a really good catalog,  I don't mean to be negative.  I will order a few items, but I am really thinking about ordering those MTH Milwaukee Electric Boxcabs from my dealer.

The GS-4 did not use an auxiliary tender during the entire Freedom Train Tour.

Scale Santa Fe Steam

Clearly stated Additional Features- The last few catalogs have been absolutely bereft of itemized lists of features (variable ash pan glow, cab light, work lights, etc).  I suppose the less they state the fewer instances of omissions and mistakes can be recognized by the consumer.  However it is difficult to purchase (much less pre-order) an expensive item based on cg photos and little information about the item's features.

Actually I am glad there is nothing that is jaw dropping... it will give my wallet a rest.

However, since you asked:

1) Northern Pacific North Cost Limited cars in the Loewy scheme, with F7's in A-B-A to match.

2) 2 pk of add on 21 inch Union Pacific excursion cars.

3) A Northern Pacific/GN/ or SP&S challanger

4) What no scale war bonnets in Legacy?

5) If you are going to remake and AC9 - make this one an oil burner.

6) PRR S1 Duplex would have hurt the wallet

7) and of course still looking for this...

I guess I'm referring to the one MTH offered for their GS-4 Freedom Train locomotive.  Item #20-3077-3.  Even if it's not prototypical to real life, I'd run it with my Freedom Train.

I think this is a common sentiment expressed by many.  So kudos to Lionel marketing for picking up on that feeling in the air.  2016 was a killer year for some budgets when everything arrived in 4Q2016.  And there's still more stuff that slipped into 2017 for delivery.  So the fact that the 2017 Signature Catalog is a bit of a sleeper will be a benefit to lots of folks.  My funds are being targeted toward layout development in 2017, so the timing was great to not see compelling "must have" items in this years catalogs.

The NYC S-3 electric - essentially same as the S-1 and S-2 from the waist up, but with a longer frame. The Central had many.

The S-3's were designed as 2-D-2 ("4-8-4" in steam-speak) locos, not as 1-D-1's as were the S-1 and S-2's. The 1-D-1 was unstable at high speeds and there was a terrible wreck with one, after which they were converted to 2-D-2's. The new S-3's were built that way.

These S-class electrics eventually wound up as switchers, but were designed as high-speed passenger locos, bringing the 20th Century Limited and others into Manhattan after the steam power was switched out at Harmon (smoke abatement ordinances).

Wish Lionel would rerun the tugboats.

I like their new scale length pass cars but would like to eventually see scale length amfleet, viewliners and a metroliner.

A scale PRR Congressional Pass Set

A scale C&O L1, NYC Commodore Vanderbilt

Catalog likes,

NS theater car

NYC E8's, wish dummy was powered

NYC ESE pass cars, wish they'd do non diner sounds diners.

Mill side Gons

Grain Door boxcars

PS-2CD hoppers
