We have the W & W (Winchester & Western)here in South Jersey. "The Sandman". It moves sand from Millville, NJ sand pits and transfers the cars in Camden.
Carl,
If your interested in more information on the C&O lightweights, both the Budd Chessie cars and the Pullman Standard cars, get the book Chesapeake and Ohio Streamliners, Second to None, Vol 1 from the C&O Historical Society. It has all the info on these cars including pictures, floor plans, and dispositions.
The L-1's were initially planned to pull the Virginia (Newport News - Charlottesville) and Kentucky (Louisvile -Ashland) connecting sections of The Chessie. When that train was cancelled in 1948 due to low ridership projections, the L-1's were mainly used on the Newport News - Charlottesville and Washington - Charlottesville portions of the C&O's other mainline trains.
The C&O seriously over ordered passenger cars. Not only was there unanticipated significant post war ridership decreases, but a long miners strike in 1948 severely cut the railroad's income.
Budd cars:
46 ordered and delivered
41 sold after a few years of service
5 retained after early 1950's
P-S cars:
287 ordered
99 cancelled
142 delivered
33 sold after delivery
117 retained
The numbers don't add up. There must be a mistake in the book, but in any case it illustrates a huge mistake in the original order.
