Me and my son will be visiting Strasburg on Sept 27th and 28th to see the 611.
If any forum members will be there those dates, we should try to do a meet up!
Any thoughts?

I will be there for the Saturday 4:30 excursion in coach. It will be my fifth 611 excursion over the past 30 years. I can't wait to see the 611,the Strasburg museum, the Choo Choo Barn and the TCA museum over my four day vacation. What time is your ride? It would be nice to say"Hello"to a fellow OGF member who knows how to spend his leisure time wisely and show his son the important things in life, like my dad did.

Have a great time guys, post images for us. Nice view of the trackwork!
I'm only about an hour from Strasburg and would love to see the 611 in action, but I hesitate to go during the 611 stay. I'm afraid that it will be like a day with Thomas but instead of being mobbed with kids, it will be mobbed with railfans.

We will be there on the same train! We are also doing the Hostling Tour that morning.

I 100% agree that it will be mobbed, but we felt that it will still be a worthwhile trip. Kinda the same as the Big Boy the last few weeks. I still think it will be a worthwhile trip.
We do plan to arrive on Friday and stake out a spot along the line to get a few photos of her pulling the train. I also plan to arrive really early Sat morning before our hostling tour to hopefully grab some shots before the crowds.

I spread my 611 activities over 3 days and 2 weekends, reserved 2 Lerro photo charters to avoid the public, but we'll see how the day goes on Columbus Day when I'm doing whistle blow, etc.

Cool,I will look for you to say"Hi" to a fellow OGF member.
Any rare steam event is going to be mobbed, it will be 611’s first time in Strasburg and eastern PA. Folks who won’t or can’t travel the 400 miles to Roanoke will jump at the chance to see it and ride behind it closer to home.
$20 parking fee if you don't have excursion tickets and I expect the lot will fill up quickly anyway.
11:00 Excursian on the first date. Get there early if you want a good spot and so you won’t miss your ride.... I hope to chase her up or go down to Strasburg the first day she arrives this week and see her.
To the guys in Roanoke, has she left yet????
I'll be there on 9/28, got the cab tour plus the ride. Also, my girl and I are doing the cover bridge tour with Strasburg Scooters on 09/29.

Did the scooter/covered bridge tour a couple years ago with my wife. We had a blast. Hope you have a great time!

Thanks! We were meaning to do the tour for a while ( My girl just loves the movie Witness.) Should be a great weekend.
Can’t wait to see 475 just as she looked in 1950! For those of you who don’t know, her headlight will be mounted in the center of her Smokebox Door.
I will be on the 4:00 trip with my granddaughter and both of her grandmother one of which is my wife.

Axcept for the big tender that she had back then. Wonder what ever happened to that nice big tender?

765 will only be at Jim Thorpe, not at Strasburg?

No. In fact, 765 will not even be at Jim Thorpe, as she will be in Ohio.
Thank you for the clarification.
765 was at Jim Thorpe in August 22-23, 2015 during one of the NS steam excursions that also ran over RBMN. I rode the Saturday run. It boarded near Bethlehem and went to the Pittston wye and return. Riding the NS track up to Old Penn Haven was very rare mileage that normally only NS crews can ride. RBMN track is regularly traveled by their excursion trains, but not so much north of White Haven anymore. They ran 425 from Penobscot to Jim Thorpe this past July. All the fall runs are on the south end of the system, like from Reading and Pottsville. This weekend you have to go to CVSR in Ohio to ride behind 765.

I heard it was swapped out with another M class when 475 was retired and backdated. Eventually it was probably scrapped. I believe there is a 6 axle tender with an M down in Roanoke? Wonder if they would ever consider a lease or buying of that tender? It’s with the unrestored M sitting in the back of the yard with the plane.
EDIT
I believe that tender care from a retired articulate. I recall a sister that was also at the Virginia Scrap and Metal that went to the Virginia NRHS. Don’t know if they would look right behind 475.
I was planning to see the 611 York weekend. I may just pass on it and head home as it doesn't sound like there will be much opportunity to see it without crowds and property issues.
I'll be on the 10:30 train on Sunday. Open Air .
I'll be at Strasburg the Friday morning of York.
Hi,
Does anyone know for sure, how long 611 will be at Strasburg. I realize that riding behind it is all booked up. I was told at 11am today it was heading to North Carolina on October 18th. I just called again & told it will be there till the end of October, mostly for the in cab experiences. What does that mean for a bystander just hanging around, photo or video opportunities? It's been 15 years since I've been there with my family, there will be the usual weekend train rides I presume? So the big question after will 611 be there, is it worth going to see 611 even if unable to ride behind. Has it been crazy crowded?
Thanks,
Joe
Friends of ours and my wife and I will be there hopefully on the 27th, I seen her in Manassas and I can truly say she is a magnificent beast.
Someone on the forum mentioned that the 611 will be at Strasburg for several weeks. I would imagine that those of us who can visit during weekdays might have half a good chance to at least see her at rest. Any thoughts ?
I know it will be stupid busy this weekend, but me and my son are going to take it for what it is. We will be there most of the day friday and have the hostling tour booked sat, along with a ride, and a whistle blow.
We will take the pics we can. We will enjoy the trains. And most of all we will be making memories with each other.
If anyone from the forum wants to meet up fri or sat let me know. jdevleerjr at gmail.com
I won't be able to attend, but I've been to Strasburg and I have some nice memories working as a car host on a few NRHS trips behind 611 back in the 80's. The excursion from Bluefield, WV to Iaeger, WV back in the fall of '89 on the Centennial Limited was my favorite. To all that are attending have a great time! I look forward to seeing all of the photos on the forum :-)
Does anyone know if 611 is there all through October/

Yes.
Thank you for the replies. Yes , it appears that 611 is there to the last weekend of the month. As I mentioned earlier, there was conflicting info about when 611 will be leaving for North Carolina. Called the same number 3 times, spoke to 3 different individuals & the story changed from AM to afternoon. So I guess I'll go.
Any suggestions where to stay overnight?
Thanks again!
I posted these on the Midweek Photo thread, but thought they would also work well on this thread.
I was fortunate enough to catch both steamers taking on water in the afternoon.
Taken from the open air coach on the train led by 611, I grabbed this one of the 475 waiting at the siding near Cherry Hill Road.
Great pics, thanks for sharing.
I made the 4:30 Coach ride on the 27 and loved it. Also made her home coming in Roanoke and noticed they removed “The Spirit of Roanoke” from the side of the cab.
Someone needs to show that video to Mr. Dickens. I'd take that any day over a coasting bigboy with the whistle stuck open
Me and my wife stayed the weekend. 611 and 475 looked great, was able to ride behind both. Hopefully we will get back down for Saturday the 19th.
