Just finished working with Woodland Scenics Plaster Cloth for the first time. Works great and relatively easy to use.
Question: What have others done when painting -- do you use some sort of primer or first coat or just go straight to the color(s) that will be used for the landscaping?

No need to prime. Flat latex paints in various shades of greens and browns soak in a bit and color the plaster just fine.
I used Woodland Scenics liquid pigment on mine. These pigments are design to be diluted with water so you just brush it on as a "wash" that absorbs right into the plaster cloth.
Its fast, works great dries flat and comes in green , and a variety of earth tones i.e. browns and greys. It gives a nice realistic earthen appearance, after it dries you can add whatever groundcover, trees, bushes, grass etc. Exposed died areas without scenery take on a "rocky" look.
I'm certainly a "novice" when it comes to scenery and the pigments were an easy way to get a "natural look" with little effort.

I did RickO's method on the first build with the cloth, this second one I used pink foam. After painting with latex I use then multiple colors of other paint.

Cheapest way to getting the best paint color you want is Home Depot. They will mix sample cans for about $3 and you can buy a box of about 2 dozen throw away brushes from them as well for about $12.
I used it here building my mountain.
I put brown paint on first then washed with green and black. The washes will fill in the white spots in the plaster.
The first pic was taken after both washes of diluted paint.

Yes, and another HD area to check out is their "Oops!" stock of paints...the ones they mis-mixed for a customer, or a customer rejected for whatever reason BEFORE paying for it. These paints...quarts and gallons...often are very inexpensive and in colors useful for broad coverage of layout scenery...browns, grays, greens, etc. Even blues show up sometimes that can help get a sky backdrop onto the surrounding wall!

Cover the plaster cloth with a brush on coat of structolite which leaves it with a sandy, gritty textire. If you want to add strength paint on a coating of hydrocal first followed by the structolite.
