I know what Frank means, in the time I was selling back in the 90's when the bell rung on Saturday I was ready to get out, packed and on the way home in the shortest amount of time as possible.

Thanks, David1, for understanding my point despite my error using "not."

Thanks to Eddie, I have been able to clarify my original intention.

And my Thanks to Notch6. I appreciate the irony.

I never understood the Thursdays at noon opening? Add to the strange bathroom tip thing and the playing of the National Anthem. I felt like I was in a Twilight Zone Movie....

Thursday was added to the Meet as a way to put a dent into the bandit meets at the surrounding hotels prior to the York Meet opening.  From that point of view it seems they were successful.

If you've ever used a public bathroom that was so filthy you wouldn't even want to go in, then we can appreciate how the volunteer bathroom attendants keep them so clean.  I have no problem dropping a few quarters or a dollar in their basket for that service.  Heck, how could I complain when I walk out of the clean bathroom and buy a locomotive for a couple hundred bucks!

As far as the National Anthem, I believe they've always played it at the start of the Meet.  It's just a nice gesture.  Anyone that has issue with it, what's wrong with hearing the Star Spangled Banner, Comrad?!

Anybody who don't like the National Anthem can always take a knee. Just don't do it in front of me.

If your spending hundreds and sometimes thousands on trains a few dollars to help keep the bathrooms clean and putting some money into a mostly guy or gal who don't seem to have allot of money is the right thing to do.

If I was dealer and I had tables at York to sell trains, I would be more than happy. The more customers that walk past my tables the better it would be for me. Even if they didn't buy anything, I would be handing out name cards and price lists. Great way to generate more sales.

Jim I totally agree. This changes the playing field. It could force someone back into his favorite hobby....

Brian, as much fun as it was working with Vince, and Trainpop, and could be again, I'm afraid that you're wishing in vain.

Acquiring start up  inventory again would most likely be a real issue.  Semi retirement has probably drained the poor guy of his umph, and thrill of the hunt.

And, you wouldn't be able to force him north for that long again. He's planted in the sun, and solidly rooted. Settled into "Death's waiting room", growing old before his time.

No, I don't think he has any plans of leaving the beach chair, and umbrella drinks ..... He's just teasing us.

Hi, buddy,..... we'd like to see you back, but we understand

I have a different take.  I just retired from 30 years of dealing with the "public".  Those of you who have not had the pleasure .... wait until you meet today's "general public".  Have fun...it will be my last year as a long term TCA member and my last York.  Just my opinion but I signed on years ago to join an organization with certain rules, decorum and procedures.  Like everything else..it seems these days...it has changed and I guess I am an old fart but I am done.  I did love my York shows.

Just go Thursday and get over it.

Honestly...I just don't see the reason to renew anymore.  50 bucks is 50 bucks so I can schlep to York twice a year.    I just don't really get the reasoning behind having a "Train Collectors Assoc" if it just turns into another "show".  The show thing is abstract to me also.  I went to a RV "show" at Hershey last weekend, fought to get parked and in the door, paid 20 bucks for us, just to see stuff for sale.  Half the stuff was not even RV related like foot massages and crap like that.  So...I guess I am just feeling done with it all.

I truly hope this fast-approaching, upcoming TCA Meet at York is one of the most successful ever, with excellent attendance, fraternity, copious sales, found-treasures, good eats, good weather, and all-round safety for everybody, as well as smiles and enjoyment everywhere one looks.

Carpe diem.

Brian funny you should mention that. With relatives in the service we won't be watching football.

Maybe this change will revitalize York, don't think opening the dealer halls to the public will have any affect on the member halls as they check badges their already because anyone can get into the fairgrounds. If TCA enrollment drops, they can just raise the member or door fee$.

I am one of those folks who joined the TCA because I thought it was a good organization, and find value in being a member. When I joined, I had no plans to attend a York train show. I haven't been to the last few meets, and have no idea whether I will attend in the future (probably not). I am still a TCA and Eastern Division member.

I was a member 3 years before I went to my first York.

The only members the TCA may lose are those folks who ONLY want to go to the dealer halls.  I would gather this to be a low percentage of attendees.  They may, however, gain members from non-TCA members going for the first time to the dealer halls and realize "wow--there are 4 more halls to see?, I'm already here, let me join and see those as well."

I don't know about the next guy, but if I traveled to a train show, paid for the dealer halls, then found out there were 4 other halls, each about the size of a Greenburg show, I'd sure as heck pay for a membership and join.

The only thing I am curious to see is the process they put in place to keep non-members out of the member halls.

That's been my experience for the last 36 York Meets !  And I think it will continue that way for me, non-member public or not.    It is so cool to be with so many people who love trains.  And a lot of fun to talk about trains with someone I've never met before.

This past April's Meet my wife and I stopped for a break at the Orange Hall concession stand.  We sat next to a gentleman who told us he was 92 years old (he looked much younger).  We started talking about trains and he told us about the huge layout he has and how he still operates it.  What a fun conversation that was!

Jim I know you will be joining me shortly in the land of white sand................but I have this full room of trains (yes, to the ceiling with no walking room) and many, many, leads on estates.........................so don't get too out of shape.

I just received my October 2016 copy of The Train Collectors Quarterly and in it the TCA President states that the proposal to open the dealer halls to the public will be Saturday only.

I guess we will have to wait and see what the Eastern Division has to say about the matter. Eventually something should be mentioned in the show registration booklet.

Gov't job, warm weather, a room full of trains, teasing us about selling at York again... You understand why people hate you, right Vince?

I think in all of this the thing that is interesting is the dates for 2018 are not announced. So what are they thinking? Sliding to Sunday and no Thursday. Moving the meet or........... which could have domino effect on lots of things hotels, parties etc.

If the ED TCA really wants the Public, the show should be changed to Saturday and Sunday. The working people and kids aren't going to come during the week, they are working or in school.

As a TCA menber simce 1991,  I don't car how high the dues rise and who they open the meet to.  I ENJOY the magazines, the friendship, the train conversations, the museum and the meets so much, I would pay $100 dues a year.  It's well worth it.  I am a retired HS teacher so I am not one of the many in the hobby that have tons of cash to spend ( I do spend my share though hahaha),  If I can spend money on trains, hotel room, and tips at the fairgrounds,  I don't mind paying dues for all the fun I have.  Most people there are super nice and friendly, a pleasure to be with.
