Remember Road Slugs? At one time CSX had a couple hundred of the things. A GP40-2 provided the traction amps for the paired slug's traction motors, an old GP30 or GP35 stripped of internals and filled with concrete.

I took this pic early '98 or '99 a couple miles up the hill towards Sand Patch from Meyersdale, Pa. See the primer-gray GP30 with no radiator vents? That is the slug. You got double the tractive effort without engines to be maintained.

NYS&W stack trains SU99 & SU100 meet at Sparta Junction- Dec. 86'. Ex- BN EMD twenty cylinder SD45 and F45 engines for power. SU99 is on the new connector off the old Lehigh & Hudson River Railway.

Whippy because some railroads experienced broken crankshafts, claiming there was too much crankshaft whip because of the extra length. Other railroads had no such problem and IIRC EMD said it was maintenance issues that led to the problem.

there was one at the CSX the other day I wanted to take a pic of it but it was in the CSX yard and I don’t like taking pics on railroad property

Great idea Lee!   I was not aware that ICC inspectors wore white.

Great idea Lee!   I was not aware that ICC inspectors wore white.  

Yes.in the 50-60s Dad said they wore white coveralls with black letters on the back that read ICC Dad call them “ The ICC boys” never seen one in any scale maybe you can be the first
