Most of my H0 is Marx, but recently have added some other brands. I know Bachmann has been around for many years, but when did Spectrum come about and what is different from old school Bachmann.

The Bachmann Spectrum Line began somewhere during the late 1980's.

Were these things growlers. The one I got this weekend looks decent and runs well but is fairly noisy.

It varies. I have some that are as quiet as a Kato others are real growlers, The EM1 and Berkshires are the quietest. The 2-8-0 and Mountains are all over the place in noise generation.

It can vary with the engine. The Bachmann GP-30 was originally (c.1989) part of the upgraded "Spectrum" line, but now is just in their standard line. That being said, the newer ones run much more quietly than the old Spectrum ones in my experience. The HO steam engines released as Spectrum engines (that is, engines like the USRA light 4-8-2, 2-6-6-2, etc....not engines like the old Reading 2-8-0) tend to run very well and very quietly.
