I'm interesting in purchasing a MTH PS2 Steam engine. Is it possible to convert it to a PS3 and what would it involved to do so. Is there that much of a difference between the two as far as performance, or just leave it the way it is?

I think and GGG, Marty and others can confirm this. The the steam PS3/2 boards are direct swaps for PS2 3volt boards. The hardest part would be loading the sound files. Been thinking of doing this very thing to take advantage of PS3 better sound files on a few of my older steam engines.
keep in mind though the ps 2 boards play the sounds louder then the ps 3 volt boards do!

So, is that the only difference is the sound? Everything else is the same?
Does your engine have a product number??????? We know you know what engine it is but we need to know if you want an answer to your question.
Product #30-1425-1 4-6-0 Santa Fe Steam PS2.
It escapes me why you'd want to spend the money to do this conversion. You'll get no more features, the only change would be no battery. Buy a $20 BCR2 to replace the 3V battery and spend the money where it makes more sense. This is a non-upgrade upgrade IMO.
Why do you want to convert this engine to PS3? It's currently a 3 Volt PS2 model. What do you expect to gain by replacing the PS2 board with a $200 PS32 board that won't provide any new features?
John, where would I buy the BCR2?
Here you go, they have 51 in stock.
That's why I'm asking about it first.
Thanks, John for the info. I'll go that route instead.
