I have a recurring problem with an otherwise fine 3rd Rail GS-4 from the last run of these engines about 6 years ago. It has TMCC RS4 Daylight sounds – or so I think (read on).

Basically the sounds will occasionally get completely garbled on startup – random chuffs, crewtalk, whistle and bell sounds. The first time this happened, I thought it was an antenna issue and re-connected the antenna wire, which seemed to cure it. Now the wire’s in place but the sound still regularly goes bad. By trial and error, I found that re-seating the audio board in the radio board restores normal sound but eventually it fails again.

Not that this will tell some of you anything you don’t know but here are the control boards inside the tender. Radio board is labelled RS4 code S01. Audio board is (mis-)labeled RS3 and Rev. C, part number 691-PCB1-04C and SV1803. I deduce from this old thread that this is probably a RS4 board but I’ll be corrected if wrong: https://ogrforum.com/...ounds-history?page=2

I have wondered if the radio board is bad. Any ideas?

In case it matters, I am running this engine using a ZW-C with 180W power bricks and a Legacy CAB2. I know the ZW-C causes some issues with Legacy control and is finicky about the order in which the transformer and command base are turned on. I have the replacement chip for the ZW-C but have not installed it yet.

Try something like Deoxit D5 on the contacts of the two PLCC chips, that should resolve the quick return of the garbled sounds.  Your issue appears to be the classic case of oxidation of the contacts on the chip causing poor connections in the sockets.

Thanks for the quick response. I am going to have to lay my hands on a chip extractor (don't know where mine has got to) as I can't risk damaging the contacts with no replacement Daylight chips or indeed audio boards appearing any more on Lionel's replacement parts site.

I have tracked down the RS4 audio boards now; chips are a different story.

But it’s just as well I found spare boards; on putting a magnifying lens to the socket on the other side of the one I pictured, it already has a hairline crack. That might have been there before or happened when I took it off/put it on the radio board. I assume however that might be the source of the problem.

John, we're not suggesting gluing the chips to the socket!  We're just suggesting gluing the socket together, and yes, you take the chip out, apply the CA into the crack, and then clamp the socket and let it thoroughly dry.

John,  Did not think you were but the possibility of misinterpretation existed.                j
