Was running my K-Line K3270-5343S around my layout, when the Railsounds cut out a few laps in. Opened up the tender to reseat the Railsounds board, turned up the volume, etc. but the engine is still silent. This might be an excuse to upgrade this engine…

Were you running it in command mode? Railsounds needs a minimum of 10.5-11 volts to operate.
You can try resetting the R2LC board to steam/sounds which is #4 reset code if you are using TMCC.

Sorry, forgot to mention I was running in conventional with just a transformer.

Are you sure? All of mine work down to about 6 VAC.

Railsounds should run down to around 6-7 VAC on the track, that's specifically to accommodate conventional operation.
