Short video of my old Lionel Large Scale PRR E6s Atlantic, now converted to onboard battery power.  Engine has a 7 cell, 8.4 volt, 5000mah, Nimh RC car battery mounted in the boiler.  I also added 2 more zip ties to the single one that Lionel mounted the motor with, under load the motor can "squirm" and strip the axle gears.  Adding a couple more helps prevent this.  Putting the battery in the boiler instead of the tender adds needed weight, but not to much as there are no true bearings in the chassis.  An on/off toggle is in the boiler backhead and a charging port is under the firebox.   The smoke unit was also removed, not realistic and they eat battery power.  This one had its dead railsounds gutted by a previous owner.  I am searching for a pair of the boiler or tender marker/class lights to add the second pair that PRR used on the pilot deck on the pre-modernization engines.  The engine had been running non stop for just over 2 hours when I shot the video.      Mike the Aspie

If only Lionel would take a true interest in gauge one trains again.  Dust off the tooling for the Atlantic, upgrade the chassis with bearings to keep the gear mesh correct, mount the motor better and put modern sound and smoke in her.  Or go with a 2-8-0 chassis to get one of the PRR H class engines that shared the E6 boiler.  Also, ditch the fragile plastic valve gear and go with metal of some sort.  Lionel was on to something back then, but gave it up to soon.  LGB had yet to do much beyond the Mogul and the White Pass diesel.  An upgraded Atlantic would have been a knock out back then.    

 

I agree that Lionel should bring these locomotives back and upgraded of course! Also ditch the aluminum drivers and wheels then use stainless steel instead.

15 - 20 years ago either CTT or OGR had an article with the designer that worked at Lionel that made the Atlantic's. Seems the boiler was longer and the higher ups wanted it shortened as they feared nobody would buy such a "large" loco.
