I turned on the layout a few days ago and I had a few locomotives with flickering head lights. After trying many things I hopped it would be, I swapped the base unit with a backup unit. Everything went back to normal and my world was better again. My first question is could I have caused this issue and 2nd, is there an option to send it to Lionel for repair (if so, should I)? Obviously the base unit is WAY out of warranty. I’m not sure if I should attempt to get it repaired or just have a ceremony in the backyard. Thoughts??

Lionel is STILL repairing these under original warranty. This topic gets covered all the time.
Contact them and get an RMA https://www.lionelsupport.com/contact-us

Even more recent (2023) and yes, CAB2 Legacy Base covered and repaired THIS MONTH.
Did you try taking the back-up unit out and putting the original unit back in and seeing if the issue returned ?
Perhaps it wasn't the problem.
@Vernon Barry Thanks for the guidance. I will call Lionel this afternoon and get things going.
Hi @Richie C. I appreciate the question. Yes, I reconnected the original cab2 base (after seeing the backup work) and lowered my head in a moment of silence to pray to the Lionel Legacy Gods (hopefully I did not offend anyone with that last part). The same exciting flicking of headlights happened and my world was sad for a few moments. Tragedy was averted when I reconnected the backup base and life went back to normal.
Ah, yes, the Legacy Gods can be unpredictable.
1) Go for the repair... and,
2) I put a 2.4 12db high gain antenna on the base and roughly doubled the range... 50ft or so now ...including through walls. The antenna came from an old NetGear WiFi that was headed to recycling.
@Dennis-LaRock I like the antenna transplant idea. Shame on me for not thinking of it. I have an access point / router graveyard…
