I found this listing on Ebay of a Lionel Legacy Command System that claims to have Version 1.5. It has the Version 1.5 manual in the box, so does that mean the system is already running Version 1.5 out of the box?

The package also has 2 blue upgrade modules, which I assume are either backup modules of Version 1.5 or they are a higher version modules. There's also a black module along with the blue modules, which I know is a blank writable module.

Here's the listing for anyone who wants to see it (link). The seller did say it's running the newest version when I asked him/her, which it most likely isn't (it would be Version 1.61/1.60 in that case). Also is that a good price for this system?

I might be able to get the price down a bit from the seller, but from what I can see Version 1.5 is what it's running out of the box because that's what manual is included. But some confirmation would be much appreciated.

I was originally going to buy a listing with an original version system (Version 1.0) but sending it to the company to have it upgraded is a bit of a hassle.

So far I have only found used Lionel Legacy systems online that sold for well over 250 dollars, and they didn't even have an original box.

The original box is enormous. The base and cab2 fits in a shoebox for shipping. The power supply usually does not need to go in for warranty. I am not into saving the Legacy box. As a matter of fact, it seems like the boxes in general are a bit of old school. I think the engine boxes make sense, and the passenger car set boxes too. The accessory, switch, etc. boxes and single car boxes may bring an extra few dollars, but storing them is almost not worth it.

It might demonstrate some kind of attention to detail on the basis of the seller, but still not really worth it.

I tend to agree with GRJ and Fred.  You get what is basically at least for now a lifetime warranty buying from a dealer.  As for the version of software, it doesn't really matter much as it can be upgraded easily enough.  I would though ask the dealer to either confirm the version or do the upgrade before it ships if you are that concerned about it.

Are you 100% sure on the lifetime warranty? Because in the Version 1.6 manual, it still says that it's a 1 year warranty. Can someone link on here where they got the information that it's lifetime?

And with software upgrade, it's not going to always be easily upgraded. If you somehow get a Legacy system with Version 1.0, you need to send it into Lionel so they can update it to Version 1.2 first and then you can proceed to update it to newer versions (at least from what I heard).

By the way, I found the system on a Hobby shop called "Mario's Trains" (Lionel Authorized) and they have the system for 330 dollars, and you can get another 15 dollars off with a promo code. Plus free shipping.

It’s an undocumented warranty which makes sense since who would buy a legacy engine if they had no way to run it...

Fair point, but it it would be nice for people to know what kind of warranty they're getting with the product.

In any case, I'm for sure buying it from a Lionel Dealer. Mainly because if I buy it from Ebay and it comes with a defect, I will have to pay for the repair out of pocket.

You said it had 1.5. That's an easy upgrade. If you want to go all the way back to 1.0 yes that's a return but again you said 1.5. easy upgrade.

As far as the warranty goes, as long as the system is not abused Lionel's policy is to repair it free of charge with a receipt. While it is unwritten, it is also well documented here.

Lionel will never publicly admit a life time warranty.

what would it take to prove it to you?

I got mine in 2010 and 2011 and sent they both back in 2017 for service.

When Mike Reagan was with Lionel he started the policy because like was said above without the legacy system how do you run command trains.

Yeah I can see why they wouldn't, or more people would abuse it. It's good to see that they are extremely supportive of their products and users.

True that! But if I buy it from Ebay, I won't have a receipt and the warranty will be void. Since it says in the warranty section that as soon as the product is sold or transferred to someone else, that the new owner will not be able to get warranty coverage.

I have bought engines off of Ebay in the past, but those aren't super difficult to fix yourself out of warranty. But with the Legacy Command base it will be a lot harder to fix it by yourself and you're not guaranteed to get the parts.

So I guess I have to ask, why did you even ask about this if you are so concerned about buying from ebay?  Put yourself at ease and buy from a shop, get a warranty, and enjoy your trains.  Lionel has been very good with the warranty of the Legacy system.  The forum sponsor's here will take care of you.

I was more asking about what version it was running out of the box. But since it's got the Version 1.5 manual in the box, that's most likely what it is already running.

In any case, I think this thread can be locked...
