should be sometime in july
You know what else is coming in July? The Base3! (Finally!) We'll get the new control system to play with and a new catalog to check out. Hopefully there will be some great stuff in the 2024 V2 Catalog. Here is my fairly long wishlist:
-SD40-2s: especially in BNSF (Swoosh, H1, and ATSF Patched liveries), ATSF, and UP liveries
-UP GP30 #844 (Nevada Southern RR version)

-Physical Cab3 Remote w/ Wi-fi
-Fastrack Turntable w/ Command-Control
Plus, all the new Legacy locomotives in the V2 2024 Catalog will have 4-Digit Addressing.
I would like to see them offer the 48' Husky Stack containers for separate purchase since only Lionel containers fit in Lionel well cars.
Get the license to produce Halloween franchise items like cars and the Myers house. Would love to have the Myers house to add some fun and spookyness with a Michael Myers figure standing on the porch.
The Munsters house or Adams Family house.
Rebuilt CSX EMD units with the "Spongebob SquareCabs"
Speaking of licensed merchandise. I've been shocked they haven't snagged the rights for Star Wars. They already work with Disney. I feel like if they gave Star Trek a shake. Unless the license is just absurdly high...

@Grampstrains posted:Lionel made a Star Wars set in 1978. Not trains. It was a race car set made to look like a Darth Vader Tie fighter and Luke Skywalker X-wing. At the Time, both Lionel and Kenner toys were owned by General Mills and Kenner toys had the Star Wars license. Lionel made race car sets called Power Passers for about three years. Since you are an LCCA member, you can find the 78 Power Passer catalog in the digital file on the LCCA website. I don't think the Star Trek set sold all that well, that may be why there is no Star Wars.
I don't think the Trek items did well either. But Star Wars has a much larger fan base. So, who knows?
I'd also love it if they did some higher quality Thomas & Friends items. I grew up with the old series with the actual model trains. I don't expect Vision Line but something more in line with what you get out of the LionChief 2.0. I think a few of us in our mid to late 30s would have an interest along some of the younger folks.
My wish list for 2024 Vol 2
21" PRR Congressional Set
21" PRR Congressional Set
21" PRR Congressional Set

Lionel Trains and Star Wars; two of my favorite things. Also, I forgot to add an EMD/Progress Rail SD70ACe-T4 to my list, and also ATSF Super Chief and El Capitan scale passenger cars. The Phantom locomotives (with both freight and passenger consists) are a must for me, too. I also want some modern freightsounds freight cars and modern Vision freight cars. We should get CN Heritage Legacy ET44ACs, too. Finally, command-controlled Postwar-styled accessories should be made.

You must be a tycoon to be able to afford a list like that!

I imagine with Disney already a licensee, Star Wars is already in the bag. But we all know Star Wars has a smaller fan base than Star Trek so if they couldn't make that work Star Wars doesn't have a chance.

I am also a fan of Trek but nothing Lionel offered was interesting enough to get me to splurge.
I also have to wonder why we haven't seen any thing from Marvel Comics since that should also be an easy one. It really is wild to think about all the stuff Disney owns now!
idk if i have said this before
but how about a train set compatable with LEGO bricks.
marklin and LGB have done it
and just imagine the play value build your own train that can work with other lionel trains
c'mon lionel team up with LEGO and let the cash cow give milk
Vision Line re-issues:
* GG1
* Baldwin Centipede
* Niagara
I would love to see some Groom Lake items in not the cartoonish schemes but more of a dreary spooky theme for LC+ 2.0 and above.
I believe all we are going to get are reissues of current tooling (Lionel and MTH). So for me, some steam era freight equipment especially in correct color schemes for late 40s would be nice.
I’ll add my two cents for the new catalog.
1. Legacy RS-3
2. Reissue of the 40 ft flat cars.
3. Reissue the PRR C-Liner with the proper four wheel rear truck.
4. New line of 60 ft passenger cars.

yes please
i want a spooky train so bad

I would think the opposite is true, that Star Wars has a larger fan base and would do better than Star Trek. Star Wars is truly iconic in our culture, and also has plenty of spinoffs regularly running on cable networks. Star Wars themed toys have also been extremely popular with kids for a long time. My grandkids have Star Wars stuff, and know it's characters, but no Star Trek things at all. I don't think they know anything about Star Trek.

Star Wars is dead.
Star Trek is dead.
Licensed stuff is dumb.
Make some traditionally sized trains that look like trains.
Make a LionChief Plus 2.0 LIRR 675/2025 with matching LIRR Baby Madison cars.

i don't think licensed sets are dumb but i wish they didn't dominate the traditional section
i would love a Horizon Forbidden West or Zero Dawn lionchief set with Aloy themed announcements as i love the Horizon video game series and i love trains
i actually have the HotWheels set from 2018 and thats a really fun set . i still get tickled by the burnout sounds that engine makes when you start moving honestly an LC2 version would be absolutely epic

I agree with this. I have plans to get some of the licensed stuff, like the Hot Wheels set you mentioned, but I'd like to see more sets with normal road names. I don't know, maybe they like to reserve that for the LC+ 2.0.
My short list....FL9....C415

I agree 100%. Stop making this expensive, novelty themed junk and go back to your roots.
I looking forward to seeing the overpriced Diesels in this catalog!
@Paul1953 posted:I agree 100%. Stop making this expensive, novelty themed junk and go back to your roots.
i think the reason the novelty stuff exists to get people interested into trains that normally wouldn't be
like people who like Frozen etc that may start to like trains more through that novelty set therefore possibly getting a future hobbyist/ customer
i bought the hotwheels set because i love trains and i also love hotwheels and crazy cars in general - the more insane the better and the hotwheels set fueled my childhood fantasies of insane trains and cars driven by ripped dudes and beautiful brave women fighting crime and saving the world while racing through frozen tundra and dusty desert and my trains serve as mobile headquarters for these warriors
man i watched too much fast and furious as a kid and i seriously need a better place to play with my trains because i need to play again so much and my tiny bedroom doesn't allow my full potential of fun
Lionel wouldn't be selling it, if it didn't generate sales. Not everyone is a rivet counter who wants a Vision Line. Some of us want the silly stuff. I ordered a Bob Ross boxcar in the last catalogue and I will guess if I order anything in Vol. 2, it will also be something "silly."

Ummm...wasnt it Mickey Mouse that saved Lionel during the depression? Without licensing you quite possibly wouldnt be playing with Lionel trains right now. Now mixing trains with futuristic space travel does seem a bit silly...whats next...a Capt Picard auto-gateman? It could say "Engage #1" when it comes out of the shack and raises his hand!

Now that is something I might have bought.

And, yet people keep buying it so there seems to be money to be had. Make stuff that people will buy, business 101 and all that stuff. I do have some Hotwheels rolling stock. Hotwheels - part of my youth.

With all due respect, why should we listen to the kinds of words we're hearing here? It seems that the naysayers here are absolutely convinced that Lionel is failing miserably. They're either marketing experts, or else they're consider themselves to be the ideal average Joe and so are empowered to unilaterally and unequivocally speak for the masses.
What's your actual training, talent and experience in the marketing of toys?
Leave Lionel alone. It's doing just fine.
On the other hand, if you're feeling lucky you could apply for the VP of Marketing job at Lionel, take the job even though it hasn't been offered to you, and straighten out this perceived mess to your satisfaction.
Anybody?

my thoughts exactly
Lionel knows what they are doing
i mean they are 125 years old
this years big book was epic and vol 2 is gonna be even better
I wish there were more people who wanted the models that I want made but I have a hunch that Lionel knows what sells better than most of us.
Let’s remember who the target audience is for some of this stuff. Young children, children and maybe preteens who tell/ask their parents, relatives, etc, they want Harry Potter or Toy Story, etc. Of course, there are a few adults, who are young at heart that want this stuff as well. For a time Thomas The Tank Engine was all the rage, Polar Express still is.

The thing about marketing, in my view, is that it is often market specific. I wouldn’t know the first thing about marketing in a grocery environment if I worked my whole life in, let’s say, auto sales. Yes, some of the same theories hold true, though unless you are gathering the info from customers, shaking their hands, talking to them, it is very hard to understand a specific market completely. I would hope that Lionel continues to make products based on what they are hearing from customers and based on what has sold well in the past. And, as a back up, there is the BTO system to avoid producing what won't sell. With that said, licensed IP will be in the catalog, and probably majority of it will find a market. What doesn’t sell, Lionel will learn from and avoid in the future.
Putting aside the fight over licensed products, Lionel Vol 2 release date is July 17th.
