I am working on going from a seasonal holiday layout to a permanent layout. I have one legacy engine now and would like to add a second as well as three conventional engines. A starter set lionel lines engine from the 90's, the Polar Express from the early 2000's and finally the 1958 746 J-class that has been the family's holiday go to since my dad got it in 1958. My problem is that I want to run all three conventional engines and the legacy engine at once. I know I can do this know just by using separate tracks, but when I add (hopefully) the other legacy engine would I have to get another legacy base to connect to the separate set of rails, or can I run two wires from the U post of the CAB base to two seperate runs of track without a problem? Due the nature of my planned layout both the legacy engines would be on different levels and I wouldn't be able to connect the track from them to share the same signal wire from the CAB. As for the other engines, (The layout will be three levels) the top will be a permanently themed christmas area with the Polar express doing a simple small oval. The middle level is where the J class and the lionel lines engine (which would be replaced by the other legacy loco I'd like to add) will run with some inner and outer loops to the far stations and siding yard for the storage of different freight loads. The bottom level would be the legacy diesel I already have with will do sort of a tunnel run underneath the city above and have a switched cut through to bring it out to another station on the outskirts of the layout.  Wow as I reread this 1. I ramble alot and 2. I am doing a poor job of explaining my setup. Anyways my issue is just what my options are with using the legacy system to control two separate runs on track. Thanks for any advice and thanks for reading!

Phoenix,

Marty is absolutely correct, from what I have been learning you might want to look at a Power Master also to hook with your Legacy base, to run your conventional engines, with the Legacy Cab2 remote Control.  I do this already with my DCS and am now looking at the purchase of a Power master myself, to join with my 990 Legacy base.  If you are going to purchase another Legacy engine, I highly recommend the Legacy Shay Steam Engine, been having blast with my early Christmas present, this gear driven monster is really a fun engine. I do believe if you are going to have a permanent layout you will eventually incorporate both DCS & Legacy, got to admit it took me years to due it, but with the new FasTrack command control wireless switches, controlled by the 990 Legacy Cab2, I loved the engineering technology and invested in Legacy also.

Have fun building your permanent layout, I had one for 10 years in the office/game room, but I needed the space for work, so it was finally taken down.  If I had a decent basement I would have a permanent layout also.

I am in agreement with Marty and Dave, if you want to run the conventional trains from the wireless remote the Powermaster is a must. I would consider it, the Powermaster, added to each loop, if not now maybe in the future so you may run conventional where you wish. I use three of the Powermasters on my layout now, one on my outer loop and two on my dog-bone which is divided into blocks. One more advantage of the Powermaster is that you can shut down power on one loop or section without having to shut down the whole layout.
