The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum announced the cosmetic restoration of American Freedom Train engine #1, also known as Reading 2101, in time for the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 200th anniversary of American Railroading in 2027. I was hoping she would get a makeover at some point. The last time I was there, she was not looking good. 2101 is what got me into Scale Engines as I saw her live in Indiana growing up.
Great to hear! She definitely deserves it🙂
Didn’t the fire destroy the tender? Wonder where they will get another one.
The tender is with the engine at the museum. They did not get rid of it as they knew 2101 was going on display.
As I understand it from the ASR guys, 2101 at the B&O museum has what was 2100's tender, and 2100 has 2101's fire damaged tender.
Interesting - I didn't know that.
So, two surviving T-1's will not run again for the foreseeable future, Steamtown has no plans to restore #2124 to operation, either. But, 2100 in Ohio will be painted in an AFT scheme, not Reading? Where would they run it? The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad?
That would be weird if 2101 is in the AFT scheme after restoration and then 2100 will be painted the same. I would think that only 2101 would have it as she was the only one to wear it.
@Robert K I can't speak to all of there plans, since I am only tangentially involved with the organization, but I know ASR has talked about operating with several railroads. Basically traveling from railroad to railroad like 765 has done in the past. Although I would definitely expect a stint on the CVSR given the proximity to the B&O roundhouse.
