KJSTRAINS, you are in luck.  3rd rail is doing the 610 in Southern livery.  But, it has a hefty price tag.

Thanks for posting the link  That would be a beautiful  and detailed engine to own.  I don't have any brass engines and I know they are very fragile.  I wonder if they get enough orders to produce it.  On other hand, it probably only requires road name change so they might still fulfill those orders if they only get a few orders.

It appears not too many dealers order these.  I guess not too many are interested.

Interesting, the Hi-Rail is more prototypically correct!

Ron

Ron,

For this reason I was wanting to see this engine up close to see if MTH only put the cab number on the engine.  One dealer online shows the cab number with the city below it for the Hi-Rail Wheel version which makes it somewhat confusing what MTH did.     Ken

Hello guys and gals

I  seen some Southern painted model trains such as the Lionel # 18301 FM diesel and the bottom part of the body is silver an top is green with gold pin stripes, is that correct color instead of white for the band around the body?   My Railking NW-2 Southern has the white band around the body so did Southern do that both ways ?

Tiffany,

That Lionel model is not correct for a Southern Railway green scheme. The white band is actually imitation aluminium, and usually has a gray tint to it. That may be why Lionel chose silver for the color.

Sweet. I love that shot.

630 was my first cab ride ever, at the age of 12. My parent saw her daily as ET&WNC # 207. Here she is at the Bemberg (Elizabethton, TN) water tower:

4501, I only saw at the age of 4, when it pulled a very rare ferry run over Seaboard Coast Line tracks through Tallahassee, to Jacksonville in 1974. I've only seen her after that while undergoing restoration in 2012.

Better still, I'll be riding behind one of these locomotives next month, maybe both if the train is long enough!

Here is MTH New 4501 in the green version.  It beautiful engine.  MTH did a good job on the details.  The whistle sounds great and is different from other MTH Southern Steam Locos.  The quilling whistle is the same as the MTH Southern Crescent Limited and Kanawha.  The Passanger Sound Announcements are on the history of Engine and Excursion type of announcements.  20160911_23013920160911_23005120160911_23015720160911_223720

Hello guys and gals.

WOW, LOVE the green and gold on this engine. It really a good looking engine !!!

Thanks so much for posting the 4501 video KJSTRAINS.

As i approach my 85th year I am very appreciative that i got to see and ride steam trains frequently during my lifetime. Bill Purdie, a true steam locomotive magician, was a hero to many of us who rode the early excursions. My first trip behind steam was with Mom at 6 months old in 1932 from Madison, N.C. to Columbus and then on to Dennison, Ohio via the N&W to visit my maternal grandparents.

Just revived my MTH 2 Rail 4501 yesterday. Wow, what a beautiful model!

I'm overall very pleased with it. But I did have to make a few modifications.

I gave the wheels white walls with a white Sharpie paint pen. I really think it make them pop. Beforehand they got lost in all the black paint.

I also painted the check valve silver, as I've seen regularly on Southern steam.

Next I plan on adding the fingernail overhang on the headlamp. I don't know if I want to fabricate the overhang itself out of brass or styrene, or just source a whole new brass headlamp piece.

Ben

Nice Ms Mikado comparison photos of the paint schemes.  Just as trivia info, the prototype for Ms 4762 was built by Baldwin for Southern in 1912 and retired August, 1951. Love those Mikes.

ps: adding a "fingernail visor" to your Mike a is terrific idea Ben. Master Mechanics at both Pegram Shops Atlanta and Spencer Shop added the visor on Ps-4s  initially and ultimately subsidiary lines with Ps-2s, 4-6-0s and many freight engines copied the idea.

Here is a Red Caboose GP-9 that I fit to a modified MTH Rail King GP-9 chassis. Tagging along is an Atlas Trainman bay window caboose re-worked to more closely resemble those of the Southern. I used True Color paint and Microscale decals on both. Weathering is a combination of pan pastels, oil paints, and pigments. This is my first time posting a picture so I'm hoping it works!

I was kind of surprised that Lionel did not number their new Light Mikado 4501 in their 2017 catalog.  I would think putting 4501 on the engine would make it a better seller.  This is probably the old K-line tooling from the previous run a several years back?  On that run, they forgot to put the builder plates on the engines.

SouthernMikado

The SD40 looks like it will be nice but it appears to be similar to SD45 which should be shipping some time in the next several months.

SD40

I don't have any plans of purchase either of these engines, but I was curious if anyone will be?

Ken,

I am purchasing neither of those engines, though I do think they'll do a good job on the high hood SD40. The Mikado, yes, does feel like a missed opportunity to decorate it in its current black scheme. Maybe Lionel thinks the market is getting saturated with 4501's, but I don't think so, especially not in black.

I'm gonna opt for the NKP one anyways.

I think the 4501 would be a best seller if it was used with this tooling:

It's the only known tooling that's accurate to 4501 in O-Scale.  It would also need a new frame that supports the 4-wheel tender trucks.
