I got one off Ebay and converted/modified it to a Seaboard M2 Mountain with Vanderbilt tender and battery-power, remote control.
It's my 1st Lionel steam engine (not counting an old Scout) and one of the best slow-speed runners I have:
Not as pretty as the Southern green, but I like it just the same.
The Lionel die-cast tender is one heavy sucker, right now it's taking up space on a shelf with nothing to put in front of it!!!
Lionscale Southern three bay nine panel hoppers have shipped. I got these from Brian at Legacy Station.

Here is the MTH 2017 Volume 2 Catalog offers for Southern Ps-4. 1372 below from what I read was lettered "Crescent Limited" but were painted in black. There was also engine 1373 was was done the same way.
Were these engines painted in ever in Green as MTH is modeling #1372?
I know that 1393-1396 were delivered in Green but not sure about this engine. I read there is a photo of this engine in book called "Steal Steam and Limited" but I don't have that book. This Ps-4 is different in that does not have the feedwater heater.
6476 below looks fairly sharp as model in photo if MTH delivers it that way, but was it ever painted Green?
Here is what MTH has to say about these engines...
Kjstrains,
That is an extremely handsome locomotive whether the prototype was green or not! I'm certainly no expert on The Southern, but I do like green!!

Wow!You really did your home work!Yes that what the mountains looked like you even got the vanderbuilt tender and numbers right.I tip my hat to you sir.Yep that a seaboard m2 steam locomotive.
Does anyone know if the MTH Premier PS 3.0 Southern E-8 cab #6009 has a different PSA soundset from cab #6000 which has the "Streamliners At Spencer" PSA soundset?
Chas posted:Does anyone know if the MTH Premier PS 3.0 Southern E-8 cab #6009 has a different PSA soundset from cab #6000 which has the "Streamliners At Spencer" PSA soundset?
Southern #6900 is the resident E8 at the NCTM were the Streamliner Event was held.
And this is the MTH version of this E8.
And I have at yet time to pull it out and test the PFA.
Is there a photo of the other side of the MTH model of No 6900?
Curious if it has the 'yellow' grab irons like the prototype? Funny, but I don't recall noticing them before... :-)
Thanks Ron. Certainly appears that MTH got that one correct. With all the hoopla stirred up recently about Sunset's new Santa Fe E8's yellow grab handles it's good to see that they really exist on a contemporary model!

I don't own the #6906 which is the cab number I assume you are talking about but I have the #6900. Mth website has the same PSA soundset posted for that #6906 as for the #6900. So I would assume they are both the same soundset. If you want different sound set you can always change it by using another prior PS2 or PS3 sound set from another engine.
Hey guy's I'm still around just been busy with work and school so I haven't had much time to post. Well after missing out on getting the MTH Southern E8's I jump on the chance to get my 1st 3rd Rail locomotive in my collection. I have to say that the details on this guy is mind blowing I'm glad I waited to get it.
Sean, Very nice and detailed model of the E8. The headlight looks very unique! More accurate than the MTH model. How does it run? The MTH model derails sometimes over switches, tight curves, and reverse curves especially if double headed.
That's beautiful Sean - great acquisition sir!
Does it have the grab rails on the right side of the cab up front? I can see one in the white area in two pics but are there more down the side?
I have haven't had the chance to run it yet I might do so when I'm on vacation later this month. From what I've been told these 3rail models can really pull a load. I have to wait and see for myself.
As for the grab iron there are some running from the top and along the nose on the engineer side of the cab. If I really had the money I would have order 3 more units but I'll just work on upgrading my 4 older weaver Southern E8's to try and match my 3rd rail one.
I can't quote the loco numbers offhand, but as I recall: the Ps4's were ordered in 3 batches over a few years. The first batch looked pretty much like the loco above - no Elesco FWH (they had side-mounted Worthington BL's, I believe...?) and an 8-wheel tender.
They were black.
After the SOU president decided that he wanted his passenger locos green, the 2 later orders (Elesco's and 12-wheel tenders) came from the works green, and the earlier locos were painted green. This has been ascribed to his visit to GB, where their "Southern Railway" employed green-painted locomotives. I suppose that this is true, but the British locos and the SOU green locos were nowhere near the same color, nor did they have similar lettering. The GB locos were a lighter, almost yellowish-green (not terribly attractive), and I think displayed typical GB shaded lettering, never popular in the US, thankfully.
MTH states that 2/3 of the SOU Ps-4's looked more like the version above. I wonder about this, but I also have no handy data to refute or confirm it.

Thank you for sharing the information on the Ps4's. The Southern Ps4 is one of my favorite engines. I have 4 of them in my collection. 1 MTH RailKing, 2 MTH Premier and 1 Lionel Legacy. I did not preorder the this model thinking it will be the same as my other MTH Ps4's except for it having 8 tender wheels. Be nice if MTH did not paint the cab roof red...then that would make it different! They could also do one with Gold Crescent Lettering in Black paint scheme, but maybe it would not sell. Did anyone preorder this model?
Here's a few note for the 43 Southern Ps4's that were delivered from 1923 to 1928:
Note 1. Lettered for the original "Crescent Limited", black/gold leaf lettering.
Note 2. #1380 was streamlined in 1941 for pulling the "Tennessean".

I've asked this before without a definitive reply, were any Ps4 locomotives painted "black" toward the end of their careers instead of green?
Sean
Thank you for providing the information on Ps4. A lot of information you provided. So 1380 was the only engine streamlined? So I wonder what year the MTH model Cab 6476 in 2017 Cat. was made and why they choose that cab number. I assume they probably found photos of it in book or other information more than the other cab numbers.
MTH Trains new Southern F-3 A Unit Diesel Engine (20-20769-1).
I would of had some more better picture to show. But had to send it back to MTH service. I want say what is wrong but you may be able to tell. It been a MTH service over a 4 week now. The engine runs and sound great!
I have no freak-"N" clue what is wrong with your F3. It happens from time to time. Should be an easy fix luckily.

I have not seen any photographic evidence that Southern painted any PS-4 or other passenger steam locomotive back into the black freight scheme during the early 1950s. It appears all stayed green until they were retired and scrapped. Southern was completely dieselized by 1953, so there was not much need to place any passenger steam into freight service, especially since the FTs arrived as early as 1943.

The PS-4 locomotives assigned to Southern Railway were numbered 1375 - 1409. Remember, Southern was considered a holding company, and controlled other railroads rather than merging them outright. The Alabama Great Southern Ps-4 locomotives were numbered 6684 - 6690 and the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific (CNO&TP) were assigned numbers 6471 - 6482. Therefore, MTH chose one assigned to the CNO&TP for that model.
The 1380 was the only streamlined PS-4, with the work being performed at Spencer Shops. It kept the streamlining until retired and scrapped in the 1950s.
One thing to note for Southern's PS-4 locomotives. Most received new valve ladders and running boards during the 1940s at various shops. That eliminated the step style running boards near the smokebox, giving them a cleaner, higher look from the front. Notice this view of 1401 at the Smithsonian and compare to every Lionel or MTH version. They all make the 1920s - 1930s versions, but this is correct for anyone trying to model the Southern during the 1940s. No one have not modeled this version as far as I know. That would be a good project for 3rd Rail if they ever make a Ps-4.

Larry, thank you for the additional information on the Ps-4's. A lot good history info on the Ps-4s. It would be nice if 3rd rail modeled the Southern Ps-4 during the 1940's. MTH did can 1401 in Proto 1 but it was modeled for the 20-30's.

I am considering ordering one but due to my disappointment with the sounds in recent Lionel diesels, I will not order one until I am sure I can stand its sounds.
Thanks ,

How is the soundest on the new SD45's? Is the horn one of the generic diesel horns they have been using or new?

They are using a 710 Prime mover sound which has a more refined sound compared to the accurate 645 Prime mover
Here is Southern SD45 at TrainWorld a few month ago when Lionel was there.
