Finally finished reading this thread. So much history. Wish all the old photos showed from back years ago

Very nice photos. Which set was it and what are the car names? Thanks for sharing!
I thought those were the 21 in lionel. Wish my mth had SR on em
Here is another photo of them in the box. MTH Item number is 20-65282. These are from 2017 Vol 1 Catalog. I debated several months about purchasing the Lionel 21 inch Southern Streamlined passenger car set. They have the black roofs and Southern Logo on each car which I like, but I decided that the length is too big for me to run so I decided to get this MTH set instead.
The car names are: Bristol, Pulaski, Birmingham, the baggage & observation cars only have numbers on them.
Now if Lionel would only make a set of Legacy Southern F3's!

Southern apparently added the emblems in the late 60s, and painted the roofs black by the early 70s, based on photo evidence. The Lionel cars are only appropriate for the 1970s Southern Crescent. Your MTH cars represent the transition from original appearance to final version.
Should be pulled by black E7 or E8 or black FP-7s. Original green units lasted until 1958 before the E8s were repainted in 1972.
Of course, they are your trains and can run any way you want. Just giving some technical data for knowledge.
I have been wanting MTH or Lionel to make correct green F3s or F7s for some time now. If MTH made them, they could be paired with the F7 set them made a few years ago, since both colors ran together in late 50s.

Hey Dewey, it is great to see you posting again. Hope all is well.
Yes the RPO car is a MTH. Matches up with the 5-car set (20-4077) and 2-car set (20-4177. Both sets were the second run from a couple of years ago where MTH kept the item numbers(??). Not sure why since latest issue uses new numbers.
Have you heard anything from Roger???????? Have not seen him post lately. Also was at the Winston train shop a week ago and was told he dropped out the the modular he help start.

Hello Ron, I'm still kicking!! I just decided to let the modular club go!! I'm back on the road playing again!! It wasn't a hard decision to make concerning letting the club go. When you have over 10 members in the club and you have the same 3 or 4 people always participating, but the rest ALWAYS have something to do, you can't have a functioning club that way!! If you continue to use the same 3 or 4 people, eventually you will burn them out!! There were so many things I wanted to do with this club and where I wanted to take them, but you can't do that without full participation. When I'm not on the road, I'm in Thomasville NC at Mike's Trains chatting with the customers and making new friends, but most of all the shop is located right next to Norfolk Southern's Washington-Atlanta main line. There is normally a good crowd out there watching trains. The name of the band that I'm now playing with is The Pizazz Band. We are a touring regional band that travels mainly in the Southeast. Last year (2017) we played 62 shows and we are already booked every month in 2018! I'll try to lurk around on the forum more than I have in the past!!...........Roger

Roger,so great to hear from you. Was getting ready to send you an eMail.
Are you still living in Winston? Do you still have a layout?
Ron
Ron, send me an email.......bevraj@yahoo.com
Yea Roger - Good to hear from you!
I tried to contact you just before Christmas and didn't hear back. Was wondering what happened to you.
What do you play if I may ask?
Hello C.Sam, I'm doing great!! Less stress and definitely enjoying life!! I STILL have my trains and my layout is still intact! I didn't put up my Christmas layout because I was too busy with playing shows and I wasn't home on Christmas or New Years anyway. The name of the band is the Pizazz Band. We play ALL GENRES of music!! This is why we stay so busy!! I play drums (Roland V Drums).

Roger
I'm also on most of the Facebook forums that feature O gauge trains. There is a bunch of great people on there to talk and show pictures and videos of our trains.......pretty much the same thing that goes on here in this forum!!.......Roger
Ron
Roger gave 110 percent to get the Piedmont Triad Club up and running and double that to keep it going. He had very little help including from me. Mid 2010 I lost capability to drive at night and soon to motor at all. Things are better now after long rehab and meds that have improved physical and mental lameness. I still struggle to navigate the key board and computer but manage to post an old photo on the Forum occasionally.
I have a ride on two rails (pictured) to my attic layout so there is no longer an excuse for not cleaning up the mess and run trains again.

Dewey,
Glad you are doing better now.

Heads up that Scott announced E7's in both green and black in the latest run:
http://www.3rdrail.com/reservation.html#E7
If the black tuxedo version gets made (i think it needs ~20 orders), I have offered to help Scott review the details/painting on the black tuxedo version. I placed my order already. I will see if I can get him to do the special coils that ended up on the roof, if I can even find drawings or a good photo. Should be a single casting used 4 times, which would be much easier than the work put into the E8 roof, so maybe I can convince him.
Lionel also announced a bunch of stuff in their catalog today:
1. Black Southern Crescent Pacific on page 17. I don't do steam, but it looks cool.
2. The SW7 (page 22) looks to have a few details slightly off from a picture I have in my book from 1978 (which I am assuming if the picture they used since the handrails are yellow and has the dual-beam headlight.) @Dave Olson I can email you a quick comparison photo if you want - lmk. Btw happy belated birthday.
3. Auto carriers (page 34). Unfortunately they are too modern for me (1977 BLT dates), otherwise I would have snatched them up. Hopefully someone does unshielded bi-levels one day, I would need about 20 various ones to make up some trains I have photos of.
Lionel in their new catalog is doing the same cab number, 1372, for Southern Crescent as MTH previewed in their last catalog. MTH is saying their Crescent Limited will be delivered in March. As I posted above in another post, MTH is doing their engine in Green where as Lionel is doing theirs in Black as shown below. It nice that Lionel is offering a variation of the Crescent Limited in black. However, Lionel is not offering any matching passenger cars at least in this catalog.

The life span of "NON-Green" Crescent Limited PS4s was very-very short.
The Crescent Limited was inaugurated April 26, 1925. "Early in 1926, the four 4-6-2s assigned to trains 37-38 began to sport Crescent Limited on the tenders with the letter "c" shaped like a sliver of moon. Crescents also ... ." "Harrison Engines" as they were called green PS4s (numbers 1393, 1394,1395 and 1395) started pulling the Crescent Limited July 25,1926. I have gleamed this info from various "TIRES" magazines.
Have not found info on the first four non-green PS4s yet but will look later. Larry would probably know.
I'm going to get the #1100 SW7 SOUTHERN Legacy engine, and the #1401 Pacific LC+ SOUTHERN engine. Says the Legacy will now run off of the universal remote!

Larry Neal posted:PAUL ROMANO posted:I've asked this before without a definitive reply, were any Ps4 locomotives painted "black" toward the end of their careers instead of green?
I have not seen any photographic evidence that Southern painted any PS-4 or other passenger steam locomotive back into the black freight scheme during the early 1950s. It appears all stayed green until they were retired and scrapped. Southern was completely dieselized by 1953, so there was not much need to place any passenger steam into freight service, especially since the FTs arrived as early as 1943.
I'm glad the issue of "black" Ps4 engines came up again with a possibly definitive answer.

So, after some research, I found the following information on the black PS-4s.
“The Southern Railway inaugurated the "Crescent Limited" an all Pullman, extra fare train from New York to New Orleans on April 26, 1925. The trains schedule was 37 hours, 50 minutes. This train was pulled by Pacific No 1372, A Southern class Ps4 built in 1924 by Alco. At this time the Ps4's were painted standard black but specially lettered for the ‘Crescent Limited’. There is a photo of 1372 in "Steel Steam and Limiteds" page 162). Number 1373 was also specially lettered for the ‘Crescent Limited’”

It looks nice. I’ll probably order one and put some of the Lionel “Carolina Special” heavyweight cars behind it.
Although I am not currently running trains I decided to order the MTH Crescent Limited RPO "mail car" that Ron highlighted in an earlier post, to fill out my MTH Crescent consist to 8 cars long, 9 plus the REA Crescent Limited Reefer by K Line. When the 9 cars are coupled to Ps4 #1396 the consist will approach 8' long which will occupy a bunch of my layout. The 9 car consist coupled behind Ps-4 #1396 will appear ridiculous on my little 9x16 layout but I have to run it some for old times sake ( & a few photos). Typically I run "short consists slowly".....4 passenger cars and about 7 freight including caboose.

This is great information on Crescent Limited! Thank you for taking the time to do the research on this. The Lionel Carolina Special cars will look good behind this engine!
The only problem with preorder is you never know what Lionel will do with the whistle sound or if it will be messed up like they have done with some other engines. I would hope that they would use the same whistle as the last run of Crescent Limited back in 2012 or something similar to Ps-4 they did back in 2006.

I hope it is similar to the CL that came out in 2012. I love that engine.
Further research indicates that 1372 was the first PS4 lettered with "Crescent Limited". There are photos in the archives at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History. Would be neat to see the photos.

Here's a Railking RS3 that I stripped down and painted in the early green color scheme. Scratchbuilt new pilots and added several brass and plastic detail parts. I still have to add lenses to the headlight castings. Weathered with Com-Art Medea airbrush paint and pan pastels.

Thanks Neal! It turned out better than I thought it would. The paint didn't want to cooperate and the Microscale decals pretty much shattered when I slid them off the backing paper. All-in-all I'm pretty happy with it. I like my engines in pairs so there's another RS3 sitting next to the workbench waiting for the same treatment.
Joe Shipbaugh
That's a very nice looking engine you've created Joe. The early RK RS1's are good candidates as well and they have the added bonus of smoke while the RS3's don't. The later RS3's do now but I don't know when they added it to the line...
I sure love these LCCA Southern cars from the 2013 convention. They go very nicely with my Weaver Tennessean!
