I have a Mikado engine equipped with Railsounds 5. No box so don't have item #. I am operating it with MTH DCS system connected with command base/TIU and do not have a cab1 but operate with a Powercab. Do I need a cab1 to get crew talk? Can cruise control for constant speed be installed on this engine and if so what would approximate cost be to do so. Thanks for any info.

 Without knowing what you have. If it has Railsounds 5 it should have cruise. It may have been turned off.  If it's a scale engine. It may be a K-line made in the early 2000's. You didn't mention Lionel but they never released Railsounds 5 to the other manufactures. Regardless. You can add cruise either with ERR if you already have sounds. Seeing you have DCS. You could go that route to. The cost if you do it yourself. Around 100 to 180 depending upon what route you go.

I believe it was 2006 as the manual number ends-2006. It runs command I have engine sounds only and need to adjust speed at certain points on the layout as opposed to my MTH engines that keep constant speed. The manual only has instructions using a cab1.

 If you flip the engine over. You should some some slider type  switches under the cab. You may need to move the trailing truck from side to side to see them. See if there's one marked Odyssey. ON, OFF. The previous owner may have moved it to off. 

 What road name is it as well as the rd. number on the cab or tender ? That may be a clue as to what you have. I assume by your original post that this is a command engine. You mention running with the TIU and Command base. I'm guessing you have a TMCC base. Just no Cab 1. You mention you are running with a Power Cab ?

Engine #1842. NYC. Do not have CAB1 just thelionel command base connected to my TIU. The only switch I find is on tender snd/off/and/on. It's set for sound on.

You have a Mikado Jr. No Cruise.  You should be able to add a Electric RR Co. Cruise M. Call or e mail them and they will help as to what you need. That will give you 100 speed steps in cruise. There site has instruction manuals where you can see if you want to go that route. You engine has Railsounds 4. DCS may be an option you might want to explore as well. Don't know what you paid for the engine. But if someone else does the work. Expect to pay 2 to 3 hundred including parts for the upgrade. If you send it out. There will be shipping both ways. Comes down to how much you like the engine and how much you want to spend.

 I would go the ERR route.  Do it yourself. They offer great support and you have Forum members that can offer advice or answer questions.

Thanks, Dave. This is what I thought was probably the case. The engine is really not worth that kind of $$ output as I will live with it as is.

It only requires you to solder one wire, you have to connect the serial data from pin 24 of the R2LC socket to the wire provided with the CC-M.  Other than that, it's plug and play.  The only wrinkle comes because it's about 1/8" longer than the DCDR it replaces.  Sometimes it requires a little modification of the heatsink to fit it in.

You do not even have to solder.  You plug in the 10 pin connector and can use a wire nut to connect to the serial data from the motherboard.  You remove the DCDR, transfer heat sink to CCM, remount and plug in connectors.  Make Serial data connection.  Should be good to go.  Picture isi from the Polar Express TMCC/Cruise Conversion.  Rear engine has CCM on the back.   G
