Hello everyone. I am new to the model railroad scene and I have a questions about wiring atlas switches. Instead of using the 22gauge ribbon wiring that they include in the box can you use say 18 gauge wiring and make life much easier? The ribbon is a pain in the neck to splice and tie into the switches. I figured if I went to 18 gauge wire I can use connectors on the spliced ends to make life easier? Anyone else have ideas?

Yes 18 gauge will work fine. Be careful to wire them correctly.

If you use 18 gauge solid (3 conductor) thermostat wire you should be able to loop the conductor clockwise around the terminal screws on the switch motor and push buttons.
thats what i was figuring mike, solid 18 gauge is much more easier to work with.
I plan on doing the same thing. I will run 16 gauge wire from the accessory post on a transformer to central locations and then use 18 gauge solid wire from there to the switch motor and On-Off-On momentary mini toggle switch.
Yep...did the same thing myself

thats something I want to construct as time goes on a nice switch panel.
You should consider the Atlas 6924 relay board. Most basic function is that it inhibits switch motor burn out. Click on the underlined phrase to link. There is a lot of good information on the Atlas website about the 6924 relay board and it's integration with the switch motors, push buttons, and turnout signalling.
Very easy to throw atlas machines with capacitor discharge, discribed here
