I was fixing the "wire monster" under my layout and discovered when I plug my powered up WIU into my REV L TIU (with no power connected) the WIU powers the TIU. My question: Is the TIU and its small power supply capable of running the TIU through the USB port? I have a dedicated Z 500 for powering the TIU but the wire monster gets even smaller if I can safely do away with it.

no, it only powers the TIU's chip.
Thank you Joe. The behavior is strange. The TIU will light up when only the WIU is powered but the WIU won't light up if only the TIU is powered with the Z500. The to me that could be hazardous if you happen to get something out of phase.

No, no hazard there. It's intentional I believe.
You have to also remember that the TIU was designed well before any thought of the WIU. Someday soon, I think they'll be together in the same package....
or maybe not.
