What type of Cruise Commander do you need for a Lionel 6-38049 Lionel N&W 2-6-6-4 Lionmaster locomotive. And who sells them.

You need the Cruise Commander M (generic)

John, I am seeing a lot of talk about buffering, which I do not understand. Do you think this Cruise Commander will work properly with this locomotive as is. Thank you
The newer CC-M versions had improved serial data handling that minimized the issues with compromising the serial data stream. Also, the generic CC-M has a buffered serial data output on pin-2 of the 10-pin connector that you can use to directly drive the IR tether in the case of serial data issues.
Ok John as always thank you for your response. I will get one of them soon.
I have received my ERR cruise commander, there are no instructions. Does this replace the motor control board, and just need's to be installed and plugged in with the existing wire harnesses. Or do you need to use all the plug harness that came with it, and re wire the locomotive. Again I am installing this in a Lionel 6-38049 Lionel N&W 2-6-6-4 Lionmaster locomotive. The kit on the web site pictured a R2LC board in the description, but I did not receive one. Just a motor control board, with all the plug harnesses and accessories.
NO, do not just plug in to the existing harness!!! It's highly likely there may need to be pin changes in the 10 pin connector.
It sounds like you purchased the Cruise Commander M, that's the modular motor driver board that adds cruise to your existing TMCC locomotive. In that case, you do indeed use the existing harnesses unless you are replacing an Odyssey I cruise board, then you have to do some rewiring to use the motor/power 4-pin plug instead of the 6-pin plug. The 6-38049 does have Odyssey I, so you'll have to follow the instructions for the power/motor plug changes.
There are also some specific instructions in the documentation for the 10-pin plug, many Odyssey I installations have a chassis ground on that connector, that must be removed.
Here's a link to the Cruise Commander M Instruction Manual, you'll need that.
John, I bought the Generic Steam that you sent me the link for.
Yep, that's the one that replaces the existing Odyssey I cruise board.
I tried to install the ERR cruise Commander in my 6-38049 Lionel Lionmaster locomotive. I removed the motor control board, but the plugs are different on the Cruise Commander. I just could not figure out what needs to be done. I thought I would use the existing plug harness, but most of them are not even the same number of pins. Do I need to use the plug harness's that came with the Cruise Commander, and rewire everything ? I just cant seem to wrap my head around this one.
That model has the Odyssey cruise, so it has a 6-pin Molex connector, the CC-M has a 4-pin connector. Yes, you have to do a little rewiring for the Cruise Commander M. That's the only one that doesn't match, the three-pin JST-EH to the motor decoder isn't used for the CC-M. The remaining 4-pin and 10-pin connectors should match.
