I have about 60 engines loaded in the remote I'm using. Lately I'll get this weird message heading for an engine. Something like "255 SMPH (L)" and then the engine address is gone forever. I've read about this in other posts. You have to relocate the engine to a new address. Do I have too many engines in this remote or is this particular remote starting to fail?

Thanks!

Oh boy, my age is showing. I forgot how this was solved.

I'm thinking DCS 6.1 fixed this. What version is in the remote?

If it's a different version than the TIU, I know there will be problems.

I also seem to remember that I had to delete several old lash-ups to help my remote. Good (remote) housekeeping is a must.

All my remotes still work and I know I saw this a long time ago.

I saw this once, but like Joe those gray cells died.  All I know is I still have that remote and it works fine.  However, I don't have sixty MTH engines, a majority of my stuff is still Lionel Legacy and TMCC.  My remote has around 25 engines and three or four lash-ups configured currently.

Truthfully, one of the easiest things you can do is to simply do a Remote Reset and reload the engines.  I don't load an engine until I'm going to run it.  Any MTH engine on the layout is in the remote, but the ones on the shelves get loaded when I'm going to run them.

You should also periodically do a remote backup so that if such a situation comes up, you can reload the last working backup and be mostly back to where you were before the problem.

Thanks! That was what I suspected. Both the TIU and remote are version 4.3 and I am probably asking too much of the poor remote with 60 engines. I really need to get schooled in the MTH app and figure out sound file changes, downloads, backups and all of the neat things that are offered. Fortunately I have 3 remotes. And a second TIU.

A while ago I followed GRJs advice and created an isolated test track and I use that to add new engines rather than have the remote hunt for the engine among all the others on the layout. Boy did that solve a lot of problems.

If you are trying to find engines with a bunch of other ones on the tracks, it makes the job harder.  Also, the more track, and also the more engines, lighted cars, etc. that are on the tracks, the weaker the DCS signal is.  It takes a pretty strong signal to add the engine to the remote.

I'd also upgrade to 6.1 in the TIU and remote you're using, there have been a lot of fixes since 4.3.
